Being in Venezuela, our relationship with contracts of that kind are not common, we just ask them if we can use the photos for further promotion and as a portfolio and that's it. I imagine that you are from a first world country and therefore this factor is important to avoid legal problems, so I would recommend you to do it.
And the economic benefit is not much to be honest. But it's also because here in Venezuela you don't pay much for it, but it helps us to sell other kinds of products like fanzines, stickers, t-shirts and posters. Besides generating contacts for future work is a benefit that is also latent and positive.

Thank you for your candid responses, I really do appreciate them.
You are correct, I live in a "First world country", but it feels so very third world sometimes. I have done photography for several charities in the past, and at their events, even handing out ~300 business cards - I did not generate a single follow up or lead.
It difficult :)
If I wasn't already following you, I shall be starting to do so. Thanks again for sharing on HIVE.
Regarding model releases, I have done a lot of TFP work, where there is no exchange of money, but an exchange of ideas and time, and it works well. I've made a few good friends through that, but even in a city of over a million, it feels like the pool of people willing to stand in front of a lens is so shallow.
