Capturing Faces for "Fe de Vida" ENG/ESP

Whenever I see a profile I like, I take photos without needing to be paid. I know it's something I'll do quickly and finish fast, as the types of faces that attract me usually have a structure I can master, and I know exactly what I'm looking for very quickly.

This was the case with this girl walking at the fair; I really liked her style. So, as soon as she showed interest in our stand, I quickly offered her free photos. She felt very flattered and willing, which I really liked because it's about enjoying the experience, not being uncomfortable with it.

"Fe de Vida" (Proof of Life), which is the name of the project, is something I love to do. The money we earn from it isn't much, but I undoubtedly enjoy doing it a lot because I like photographing people and getting to know them through photography, which ultimately is what fulfills me the most.

"Fe de Vida", que es el nombre del proyecto, es algo que me gusta hacer y el dinero que ganamos por ello no es mucho, pero indudablemente me gusta mucho hacerlo porque me gusta fotografiar personas y conocerlas a través de la fotografía, que al final es lo que me llena más.

Can you please explain a little more about the set up you had? I've thought I've hiring a "table" at things like local markets and setting up a mini studio for portraits. Is that what you're doing here? I would love to know more.

I might start at Haloween this year, it is big in our neighbourhood, and I can just open up the garage door and grab images of people in costume as they trick or treat, and send them on their way with a business card and a jpg (while having them sign a model release!)

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing, transferring a studio concept to trade fairs. What I do is use 2 flashes with an octabox on top and a harder light for the cut, the key is to set it correctly so that the ambient light doesn't contaminate the lighting composition you are putting together.

Sounds fantastic. Are you finding financial success with it, or is it more about lead generation for other jobs? For something like this, do you give everyone a model release form to sign? Sorry for asking so many business questions, but it is rare to be able to talk this type of "shop" with other photographers :)

I just like taking people's portraits!

Being in Venezuela, our relationship with contracts of that kind are not common, we just ask them if we can use the photos for further promotion and as a portfolio and that's it. I imagine that you are from a first world country and therefore this factor is important to avoid legal problems, so I would recommend you to do it.

And the economic benefit is not much to be honest. But it's also because here in Venezuela you don't pay much for it, but it helps us to sell other kinds of products like fanzines, stickers, t-shirts and posters. Besides generating contacts for future work is a benefit that is also latent and positive.

Thank you for your candid responses, I really do appreciate them.

You are correct, I live in a "First world country", but it feels so very third world sometimes. I have done photography for several charities in the past, and at their events, even handing out ~300 business cards - I did not generate a single follow up or lead.

It difficult :)

If I wasn't already following you, I shall be starting to do so. Thanks again for sharing on HIVE.

Regarding model releases, I have done a lot of TFP work, where there is no exchange of money, but an exchange of ideas and time, and it works well. I've made a few good friends through that, but even in a city of over a million, it feels like the pool of people willing to stand in front of a lens is so shallow.
