The Hamburg fish market is a traditional fish market at the city's harbor. Every Sunday, up to 70,000 visitors come here to do their shopping or simply to watch the hustle and bustle out of interest.
The fish market has existed since 1703 and not only fish is traded here, but somehow everything that could be bought in everyday life. Here in Augsburg we would probably call it a "Dult".
It starts at 5 o'clock in the morning and ends at 9:30.

Of course, this was also a must for us. We actually thought that the wholesale fish trade would also take place there, between which you can treat yourself to fish sandwiches and coffee at the stall. That's why we didn't question the time, namely 5 o'clock. Sounds logical, as fishermen are known to arrive very early and want to sell their goods.
That's why we went straight to the fish stalls that we had seen at the harbor two days earlier. But what did we discover?

Nothing going on here. Everything was closed. There was no sign of 70,000 people. Maybe 7, if you count the cleaners.

After a bit of googling, it was clear that we were at the wrong fish market. The touristy one was about 500 meters further towards Landungsbrücken.
Let's go then.

Now that we had reached the fish market from behind, we first came to the fish auction hall.

It was about 7 o'clock and there was a live band playing. Beer tables were set up in the middle and of course there was beer, fish sandwiches and co at the stand.

This is what a hamburger does on a Sunday morning at 7 o'clock. A beer for breakfast in the hall with live music.

When we got outside again, we walked past the market stalls.

Fruit, vegetables and leather goods are probably the best sellers there.

But the coolest I found was the espresso man Jessy. He put on his own show with his little espresso store. Loud reggae music came out of the speakers and he himself was probably not entirely averse to the religious cult of Jamaica. But he was so excited that it probably wasn't ganga that he had for breakfast. But he was funny and that's why I got my espresso from him there.

Otherwise, of course, there are plenty of fish products there. From eel to zander, you can get almost anything here.

The fish market is known for its market criers. It's a bit like the sales channels on TV, only louder and you get things straight to your hand. It remains to be seen whether you really need everything that comes in the bag. For 10 euros, the bag is simply filled up. Regardless of whether you want it or not.
Ultimately, I think you get more for your money than if you bought the items individually in the supermarket, but would you really buy them all?
If I want three bananas, I buy three bananas and pay 2 euros for them. Then you have three bananas, a pineapple, grapes, mandarins, tomatoes and so on for 15 euros, but they probably only last a few days as they are no longer the freshest. Well, if you want it, go for it.

And fish and fish sandwiches again. There I treated myself to a breaded fish fillet in a roll. I'm not really a fan of this kind of thing, but I think it's a must at the fish market. What can I say, it was the best fish roll I've ever eaten.

We were here at the beginning of February. At that time of year there was no sign of 70,000 people. I think there were maybe 7,000.
But I can imagine that there are significantly more people there in summer when the temperatures are not so icy.

This is an overview of the entire fish market from a wall. I imagined it to be bigger.

By the way, this is what the square looks like on a normal weekday. Empty and without stalls.

It was a very entertaining Sunday morning. But it had almost nothing to do with what we expected. We thought we would see large quantities of fish and a lot of confusion between sellers and buyers. The fish market we saw was more like a classic Dult. And the Augsburg Dult is actually much bigger. Don't even get me started on the Auer Dult in Munich.

We did some research afterwards and found out that the real fish market starts at 2am and is over by 5am. It would have actually been in the fish halls that we had visited first. Too bad. We'll probably have to come again.
So for those who have never been there before, please go there at 3 o'clock. First to the fish halls, then you can have a look at the Hamburg fish market.
If only we had informed ourselves beforehand. But as this was the last day for us and we were driving home again the next morning, we now only know the one. At least so far.

Der Hamburger Fischmarkt ist ein traditioneller Fischmarkt am Hafen der Stadt. Jeden Sonntag sollen hier bis zu 70 000 Besucher kommen um dort ihre Einkäufe zu machen, oder einfach aus Interesse das Treiben dort anzuschauen.
Den Fischmarkt gibt es schon seit 1703 und gehandelt wird hier nicht nur Fisch, sondern irgendwie alles was man so im Alltag brachen könnte. Bei uns in Augsburg würde man wohl "eine Dult" dazu sagen.
Es geht um 5 Uhr in der Früh los und endet um 9:30 Uhr.

Natürlich war das auch für uns ein Muss. Eigentlich dachten wir, das dort auch der Fischgroßhandel stattfindet, zwischen dem man sich seine Fischbrötchen und Kaffee an der Bude gönnen kann. Deshalb haben wir die Uhrzeit, nämlich 5 Uhr nicht hinterfragt. Klingt logisch, denn Fischer kommen ja bekanntlich sehr früh an und wollen ihre Waren an den Mann bringen.
Deshalb sind wir auch gleich zu den Fischhallen, die wir am Hafen zwei Tage vorher gesehen habe, gelaufen. Aber was musste wir feststellen?

Nix los hier. Alles zu. Von 70 000 Menschen war nichts zu sehen. Vielleicht 7, wenn man die Reinigungskräfte dazu zählt.

Nach etwas googlen war dann klar, wir waren auf dem falschen Fischmarkt. Der touristisch bekannte war ungefähr 500 Meter weiter Richtung Landungsbrücken.
Na dann los.

Da wir jetzt von hinten auf den Fischmarkt gestoßen sind, kamen wir als erstes in die Fischauktionshalle.

Es war ungefähr 7 Uhr und dort spielte eine Liveband. In der Mitte waren Biertische aufgestellt und natürlich gab es Bier, Fischbrötchen und Co am Stand.

Das macht also der Hamburger am Sonntag in der Früh um 7 Uhr. Ein Bierchen zum Frühstück in der Halle mit Livemusik.

Als wir wieder nach draussen kamen, ging es dann an den Marktbuden vorbei.

Obst, Gemüse und Lederwaren sind wohl dort die Verkaufsschlager.

Aber den coolsten fand ich den Espresso Mann Jessy. Der hat mit seinem kleinen Espresso Laden seine eigene Show abgezogen. Laute Reggae Musik kam aus den Boxen und er selber war wohl dem Religionskult des Landes Jamaika nicht ganz abgeneigt. Wobei er so aufgedreht war, dass das wohl kein Ganga war, was er sich zum Frühstück gegönnt hat. Aber er war lustig und deshalb habe ich mir meinen Espresso dort bei ihm geholt.

Ansonsten gibt es natürlich jede Menge Fischprodukte dort. Von Aal bis Zander bekommt man hier wohl fast alles.

Der Fischmarkt ist bekannt für seine Marktschreier. Es ist so ähnlich wie Verkaufskanäle im TV, nur lauter und man bekommt die Sachen gleich auf die Hand. Ob man wirklich das alles braucht, was so in die Tüte kommt, sei dahin gestellt. Für 10 Euro wird die Tüte einfach mal voll gemacht. Egal ob man es will oder nicht.
Letztendlich denke ich, man bekommt schon mehr für sein Geld wie wenn man die Dinge einzeln im Supermarkt kaufen würde, aber würde man die Dinge wirklich alle kaufen?
Wenn ich drei Bananen will, kaufe ich drei Bananen und zahle 2 Euro dafür. Dort hast du dann drei Bananen, einen Ananas, Trauben, Mandarinen, Tomaten und und und für 15 Euro, die aber wohl nur ein paar Tage halten, da sie nicht mehr die frischesten sind. Na ja, wer will, soll es machen.

Und wieder Fisch und Fischbrötchen. Dort habe ich mir ein paniertes Fischfilet im Brötchen gegönnt. Eigentlich bin ich ja kein Fan von sowas, aber am Fischmarkt ist das schon ein Muss denke ich. Was soll ich sagen, es war das beste Fischbrötchen, dass ich jemals gegessen habe.

Wir waren hier Anfang Februar. Zu dieser Jahreszeit war von 70 000 Menschen nichts zu spüren. Ich denke es waren vielleicht 7 000.
Aber ich kann mir schon vorstellen, dass dort im Sommer bei nicht so eisigen Temperaturen, deutlich mehr Menschen zu finden sind.

Das ist ein Überblick auf den kompletten Fischmarkt von einer Mauer aus. Ich habe es mir grösser vorgestellt.

So sieht übrigens der Platz an einem normalen Wochentag aus. Leer und ohne Buden.

Es war ein sehr unterhaltsamer Sonntag Vormittag. Er hatte aber so gut wie gar nicht mit dem zu tun, was wir erwartet haben. Wir dachten, dass wir große Fischmengen sehen und ein großes durcheinander zwischen Verkäufern und Käufern. Der Fischmarkt den wir gesehen haben, war eher eine klassiche Dult. Und tatsächlich ist die Augsburger Dult sogar viel größer. Von der Münchner Auer Dult will ich schon gar nicht anfangen.

Wir haben uns danach nochmal schlau gemacht und rausgefunden, dass der richtige Fischmarkt um 2 Uhr in der Früh startet und um 5 Uhr früh schon vorbei ist. Der wäre dann tatsächlich in den Fischhallen gewesen, die wir zuerst besucht hatten. Schade. Da müssen wir wohl nochmal kommen.
Für die, die noch nie da waren also der Hinweis, geht schon um 3 Uhr dort hin. Zuerst zu den Fischhallen, danach könnt ihr euch den Hamburger Fischmarkt anschauen.
Hätten wir uns doch vorher informiert. Da das aber der letzte Tag war für uns, und wir am nächsten Morgen wieder nach Hause gefahren sind, kennen wir jetzt nur den einen. Zumindest bis jetzt.
