Augsburg's heyday was in the 15th century. At that time, the Fuggers lived here in the city and contributed significantly to the city's development.
The Fugger family were the richest people in the world at that time and influenced kings and popes.
Even at that time, wealth was not easy to achieve through hard work. Corruption was probably the order of the day. Officially, however, for the Fuggers it was trade.
But because the common people were already dissatisfied with the distribution of power, the rich Fuggers came up with something.
Thus, outside the gates of the city, but still within the outer line of defence, the oldest social settlement in the world came into being.
The Fuggerei.
In this way, the Fuggers could buy themselves a good conscience and, apart from the bloodletting that was customary at the time, it was also a kind of cleansing of the conscience.
This week I was on my way to Jakoberstrasse, where this social housing estate is located.

From the city centre, down Perlachberg, you come directly to Jakoberstrasse. There are still mostly very old houses there.

Bars, pubs, restaurants, antique dealers and various other shops are lined up on the ground floor.
Above them are mostly small flats.

Here is a very nice old house, built sometime in the 15th century.

You could almost miss it walking past, but here is the Fuggerei.

By the way, the annual rent per person is 0.88 euros. Yes, that's right. 88 cents. But there are a few conditions, which I will tell you about another time.

When I go into the Fuggerei itself again this summer, there will be a big post directly about it. As a non-resident, you have to pay admission.

Further down, at some point, comes the Jakober Kirche and the Jakober Tor.

Die Blütezeit Augsburgs war im 15 Jahrhundert. Damals haben die Fugger hier in der Stadt gelebt und wesentlich an der Stadtentwicklung beigetragen.
Die Familie Fugger waren die reichsten Menschen der damaligen Welt und beeinflussten Könige und Päpste.
Auch zu dieser Zeit, war Reichtum nicht einfach durch harte Arbeit zu erreichen. Korruption stand da wohl an der Tagesordnung. Offiziell war es bei den Fuggern aber der Handel.
Aber weil damals schon das gemeine Volk unzufrieden war mit der Machtverteilung, ließen sich die Reichen Fugger etwas einfallen.
So entstand vor den Toren der Stadt, aber noch innerhalb der äusseren Verteidigungslinie, die älteste Sozialsiedlung der Welt.
Die Fuggerei.
Somit konnten sich die Fugger ein gutes Gewissen erkaufen und neben dem damals üblichen Aderlass, war das auch eine Art Reinwaschung des Gewissens.
Ich war diese Woche in der Jakoberstrasse unterwegs, in der auch eben diese Sozialsiedlung ist.

Von der Stadtmitte aus, den Perlachberg runter, kommt man direkt in die Jakoberstrasse. Dort stehen noch größtenteils sehr alte Häuser.

Ebenerdig reihen sich hier Bars, Kneipen, Restaurants, Antiquitätenhändler und diverse andere Shops aneinander.
Drüber leben sind meistens kleine Wohnungen.

Hier ist ein sehr schönes altes Haus, gebaut irgendwann im 15 Jahrhundert.

Man könnte sie fast übersehen beim vorbeilaufen, aber hier ist die Fuggerei.

Übrigens, die Jahreskaltmiete beträgt pro Person 0,88 Euro. Ja richtig. 88 Cent. Es gibt aber ein paar Auflagen, die ich euch aber ein anderes mal erzählen werde.

Wenn ich im Sommer wieder einmal in die Fuggerei selber reingehe, gibts einen großen Post direkt dazu. Als Nichtbewohner, muss man Eintritt zahlen.

Weiter runter kommt irgendwann die Jakober Kirche und das Jakober Tor.
