The river Scheldt flows through Antwerp. As it is one of the largest ports in Europe, you can imagine how wide this river is.
It would probably be a big challenge to swim across and your clothes would get wet.

But what do you do if you live on one side of the river but your workplace is on the other?
There are often bridges for cars and somehow the pedestrians are often squeezed in with the cyclists.

But Antwerp has a different solution.

The Sint Annatunnel.

As early as 1874, the people of Antwerp realized that they needed a connection from one side to the other. Bridges were rejected because the important shipping traffic would be too much of a hindrance.

After almost 60 years of discussion, it was agreed in 1931 to build a tunnel there.

To this day, most of the buildings at the entrance are still in their original state.

We had to search a bit to find the entrance. The building is not directly on the river, but about 200 meters right downtown.
I wouldn't have really noticed it if we hadn't been looking for it with the satnav.

According to the website, the fences are still original from the 1930s.

The escalator was more than a surprise. There aren't really many wooden staircases still active in our world. I know the ones in Prague, London, New York and now this one in Antwerp.

There is also an elevator for bicycles, but I think if you're not on a cargo bike or child seat, everyone takes these stairs.

For someone like me, who is not used to using an escalator on a bike, it took a bit of getting used to.
I was almost frantically pressing the brakes because I didn't want my bike to slip away.

But the people of Antwerp have developed a technique for using escalators without brakes.
It took us a while to figure it out, but in the end it was logical.
You simply turn the front wheel crossways. How simple a solution can be. But if you don't know it yet and only have a little space and time, you don't think about it at first. It's only when you see others doing it that you follow suit.

You go down two escalators until you reach the actual tunnel.

And it is long.

With a length of 572 meters and a depth of 31.5 meters, it undercuts the river.

And then it goes up again on the other side with the wooden escalators.

If you have some time, you can take a look at the pictures that were taken during construction.

And this is what the entrance/exit looks like on the other side.

The reward is the view of the Antwerp skyline. Somewhere on the other side was the entrance to the tunnel.

Very cool. This was the first pedestrian and cyclist-only tunnel under a major river that I was allowed to use. And what a tunnel. It's not listed as one of Antwerp's top sights for nothing.

If you're ever there, take a look at it. With or without a bike. It's really worth it.

Durch Antwerpen fließt der Fluss Schelde. Da der Hafen eines der größten Hafen in Europa ist, kann man sich auch vorstellen, wie breit dieser Fluß ist.
Zum durchschwimmen wäre es wohl eine große Herausforderung und die Klamotten werden dann nass.

Was macht man aber, wenn man an der einen Flußseite wohnt, die Arbeitsstelle aber auf der anderen Seite ist?
Dafür gibt es oft Brücken für Autos und irgendwie werden oft auch die Fußgänger mit den Radfahrern dort reingequetscht.

Antwerpen hat aber eine andere Lösung.

Der Sint Annatunnel.

Schon 1874 war den Antwerpern klar, dass sie eine Verbindung von der einen zur anderen Seite bräuchten. Brücken wurden abgelehnt, da der wichtige Schiffsverkehr zu stark behindert würde.

Nach fast 60 Jähriger Diskussion, einigte man sich 1931 darauf, einen Tunnel dort zu bauen.

Bis heute sind die meisten Teile der Gebäude am Eingang im Originalzustand.

Wir mussten etwas suchen, um den Eingang zu finden. Das Gebäude ist nicht direkt am Fluß, sondern noch ca. 200 Meter richtig Innenstadt.
Wirklich aufgefallen wäre es mir nicht, wenn wir nicht mit dem Navi dort gesucht hätten.

Laut Webseite sind auch die Zäune noch original aus den 1930er Jahren.

Die Rolltreppe war mehr als eine Überraschung. Holztreppen sind nicht mehr wirklich viele aktiv in unserer Welt. Ich kenne die aus Prag, London, New York und jetzt auch diese in Antwerpen.

Es gibt für Fahrräder auch einen Aufzug, aber ich glaube, wenn man nicht mit dem Lastenrad oder Kindersitz unterwegs ist, fahren wohl alle mit dieser Treppe.

Für jemanden wie mich, der es nicht gewohnt ist eine Rolltreppe mit dem Rad zu benutzen, war es etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig.
Ich habe die Bremse schon fast krampfhaft gedrückt, weil ich nicht wollte, dass mein Rad mir entgleitet.

Die Antwerper aber haben eine Technik entwickelt, wie man ohne Bremse Rolltreppen benutzen kann.
Wir haben etwas gebraucht um das zu durchschauen, aber letztendlich war es logisch.
Man stellt das Vorderrad einfach Quer. Wie simpel kann eine Lösung sein. Wenn man diese aber noch nicht kennt, und nur wenig Platz und Zeit hat, denkt man darüber zunächst nicht nach. Erst wenn man andere sieht, macht man es nach.

Es geht zwei Rolltreppen in die Tiefe bis man auf den eigentlichen Tunnel stößt.

Und der ist lang.

Mit 572 Meter Länge und 31,5 Meter tiefe unterwandert er so den Fluß.

Und dann gehts auf der anderen Seite wieder mit den Holzrolltreppen nach oben.

Wenn man etwas Zeit hat, kann man sich noch die Bilder ansehen, die beim Bau entstanden sind.

Und so sieht der Eingang, bzw. Ausgang auf der anderen Seite aus.

Die Belohnung ist der Ausblick auf die Skyline von Antwerpen. Irgendwo auf der anderen Seite war der Eingang des Tunnels.

Sehr cool. Das war für mich der erste reine Fußgänger und Radfahrer Tunnel unter einem großen Fluß, den ich benutzen durfte. Und was für einer. Nicht umsonst wird er unter den Top Sehenswürdigkeiten von Antwerpen geführt.

Wenn ihr mal dort seit, dann schaut ihn euch an. Mit oder ohne Fahrrad. Er ist es wirklich wert.
