Three Famous Facades & Buildings in the Historical Downtown of Valencia (Spain)
Hello archi lovers!
We return once again to tour those usual streets, full of memories and a lot of history, of stories of many, of different stories, and that finally today, walking and looking around we can enjoy. We return to the historic center of the Spanish city of Valencia to discover three important and imposing buildings, which you cannot miss if you go around.
And of them we can say that the three are historical, they stand out from more modern ones that were built over time, but that they have managed to merge with their environment, remain relevant and vital for those who live and appreciate them, popular for both premises and tourists. They are special and unique, and in turn different.
Central Market (Mercado Central)
I share, on the one hand, the Central Market of Valencia, renewed, and of spectacular modernist style, and always full of life, because there are still many people who continue to buy fruits, vegetables, meats or fish in their interior positions, between countless visual, olfactory and sound stimuli.
But this changes later in the afternoon, when it closes its doors, the calm returns and we walked around this great building, to better appreciate in its different and striking facades its different details, such as the colorful tiles, the original decorations and the modern forms of another era. Not forgetting those yellow awnings of other business of typical local products that are still there despite the passage of time, in the most authentic way.
In its perimeter, different facades are surprised in the same building, on the other hand, we discover this door that leads to the Department of Commerce and Supply, which could not be in a better place than in the most important market in the city.
And here some peculiar details closely. We observe those traditional bricks in bright colors, yellow and blue, very typical in this area, and at the same time, an old wrought iron grid with a beautiful design that ventilates the lower floor, are corners that are worth discovering with a little time.
And on the other hand, even more, another form of facade, and an open area with more palm trees that make the environment pleasant to enjoy more of this area, and also combines perfectly with other styles and buildings that we see close. The different architectures and spaces make up and build that place that is preserved, observed and admired by all!
The market palace (La Lonja)
On the other hand, another fantastic place is a cute palace, with inner surprise. Beautiful palm trees form columns (that you have to discover inside) and a laced patio with stairs that lead to the battlements on their left side. Also to the tower that, in the past, was used as a prison for those commercial crimes that were judged there. Because it was precisely a "Chamber of Commerce", for those first trade, above all, maritime, one of the first commercial codes of the sea was published here, and over centuries are now some days come interested in coins collections, etc.
But today is a day of facades, and we observe this, in addition to the flag of the region on top, and the palm trees around us, the battlements, and the windows, with their arches and small decorations that make the whole an elegant and beautiful facade. And if we look at their side by one of the cobbled streets, we discover other architectural elements such as species of gargoyles or sculptures that stand out out, and a shield carved in relief just at the corner angle. Precious details that remain exquisite every time we pass by.
Church of Santos Juanes (Iglesia de los Santos Juanes)
Finally, between one and the other, an equally charming and also spectacular building that rivals in front of the other two commented. A religious baroque building, a large church that makes us turn our heads there, towards the tower and the large statues of its corners, and of course, by its main door (or not main, because now we will see that it has two more) with a large decorated lintel and a front courtyard that even gives more emotion if we decide to enter.
And a door rivals another, this side accessing a narrow street in front of the central market takes us to this impressive facade with impressive stone decorations.
But then we turn the corner, and suddenly, a much smaller style gives us surprise, with a great strange circle that we did not expect with another traditional door also decorated. What will be the function of this great circle? Is it from the same era or more modern? It's weird, right? In the end in one way or another, with one style or another, or several mixed, architecture never stops fascinating us where we enjoy it.
I hope you liked this part of the city, these three emblematic and popular buildings that I wanted to show you, although only on the outside, to be able to pay attention to those beautiful facades, and now, to see the interior, it will be another day...

Oh, there are so many things to see! For example, this area I'm showing you in this post, and then others: markets, squares, the large beach, the port, museums, the fake river that's now a park, etc. And yes, of course, there's the aquarium, the largest in Europe, and the modern architecture around that area, but just walking around is a pleasure! Then there's the paella and the horchata!
I don't think there are many differences between the two cities, but maybe it depends on tastes and preferences, I don't know. Anyway, if you want to come, let me know!!!
All of them are beautiful facades with different styles. This city has a lot of architectural jewels as we san see. I loved the pictures, great captures.
Thanks! Yes indeed, all those facades are different but the zone is great as all of them match well with the others, like an architectural harmony. Happy day!
So much beauty in such a small space! In the summer I visited Valencia and was able to visit it in depth, what surprised me the most was its Central Market. I love modernist art and everything to do with that period. We all have Gaudí in mind but there is much more spread around the country, that market is beautiful. The other two buildings are not far behind, I really liked the detail of the little angel with the coat of arms and as for the church, baroque is another style that dazzles with its decorative splurge. What a curious contrast with the rear façade. As for the circle, I get the impression that there was once a rose window or something similar, which was damaged and had to be replaced. Could it be a sundial? Those lines and numbers... and I can just make out the stick on which the sun's rays fall, casting their shadow on them. Thank you for giving us this walk full of art.

Thanks Paloma for your words and support on the @ourpick project! These area is very popular and I'm glad that you have visited it. I love baroque style and I think it's one of the best for churches 💖
And certainly modernist art is more than Gaudí's known masterpieces. In fact also near there is the Colon's market which now is somehow open air with no walls just the roof and up part and that is also modernist and well restored!
About the circle I have to investigate but I really like the sundial idea 😉 if I can figure it out I will let you know.

I'll make a note of the Colón market for my future visit, which I hope will be sooner rather than later. I know the most important parts of Valencia, but your walks around the city are opportunities to discover new places. Your view of the city is quite similar to mine, which also helps. 😁
Oh good to know! Well in all the cities there are more popular areas which are more visited, but just walking even locals can discover other interesting places, nice views and lovely details, I love that! 😉
Absolutely agree! It’s amazing to visit your city trying to see it like a tourist. I love it too.

Ah by the way! I was consulting finally Wikipedia to know about the circle, and it wasn't a stop at the end, until the other hypothesis you commented on:
"The main facade of the church retains a walled-up oculus of a rose window from the older church".
Mystery solved! Everyday we can learn about something!😊
Damn, we should have made a bet! 🤣🤣 Thank you for sharing the results of your research.
Jaja yeah it's a good idea really, next time maybe I should add a survey on the post!

I'm under the impression that almost everything in Spain looks amazing! Totally love seeing more photos from the various places in Spain as it takes me closer to my daughter (she's in Barcelona for over a year now). I wish I can someday travel and experience Spain for myself too.
An advance happy weekend...

I mercati sono sempre interessanti secondo me
!LOLZ
Thanks! Yes, indeed, Spanish Mediterranean cities are somewhat similar, and now it's always full of Italians! And it has a lot in common with Mallorca, even being one of the first places to have a maritime trade code... and a lot of history, too...
As for the circle, it's a great idea, like a sundial, right? I think so too, but I'll have to see if I can find out more!

!PIZZA
Yeah it could be.... I will look for information about it...
I finally looked up some information on Wikipedia, and no clock but an ancient rosette from the front church... after covered.

Jaja was covered I imagine that it was destroyed for some success and then they made this strange design ... nothing, I didn't know this either!

Greetings @duvinca, the city has some beautiful buildings. It's a great destination to see a variety of architectural designs. My favorite is the Church of the Sacred Juanes.
Hi dear @belkyscabrera! Yeah it's a great destination indeed, now many tourists are discovering the city and even myself I realize how many remarkable places are here! And the church is very charming, love baroque style! Happy Friday!
I've only been to Spain once, and that was in Seville. I've only heard of Valencia. A colleague of mine moved to Valencia a year ago. Your post showing us this city is very beautiful. If I'm not mistaken, Valencia's "La Lonja de la Seda" is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your photos show beautiful architecture. The colorful ceramics found on the buildings are beautiful and give the city a cheerful feel. Thank you for showing us a piece of Valencia's beauty. !HBIT
Actually there are many Italian people here I can hear them everywhere (ovunque jaja) and you said well, the gothic building of La Lonja is a UNESCO world heritage site for all the history it has and the beautiful design, you're good!!! Hope one day you can come and visit it!

The Church truly stands out with its impressive exterior design, the detailed stone carvings, majestic statues and beautifully decorated doors all come together to create a breathtaking baroque masterpiece.
In my opinion the baroque style is gorgeous and the best for churches, all of them look majestic right? And this one too of course, love the decorations on the stone around the doors, and also the main facade with the statues and details. It's stunning and I'm glad you like it too! Thanks!
