Škofja Loka: the charming town in the green mountains of Slovenia

Hello Pinmapplers!

Sometimes we need to breathe fresh air, oxygenate our body and also our mind, get out of noise, stress and routine. And sometimes we can take a trip within the trip, traveling through a small and green country that is Slovenia, we discover a fairy tale place, from another time, with medieval walls, green meadows and views of distant snowy mountains, all in one unforgettable visit.

Škofja Loka

We go by train, where the panorama is green all the time, and already in the distance we can see the orange roofs and in the background the mountain peaks even with that snow that remains almost all year. And it looks as if it were the landscape that someone has painted in a nice work of art.

But it's real, and we arrive at Škofja Loka and feel like we've traveled back in time. Everything is fresh, clean and natural, the green is bright and intense and the image of the place is bucolic and charming.

The river runs quickly and with a lot of water, full of life crossing the place, the various charming houses and a robust bridge. Again another picturesque image.

All the walls are thick, made of pale stone, which contrasts with the pointed roofs prepared for the winter snow that then reaches here, but now in spring everything is green, and greener, sprinkled with something more like yellow of some small flowers that adorn everything.

It is a fairy tale setting, even with a castle at the top of the mountain, where we arrived at a unique moment, in the middle of a medieval dance performance, where its people, proud of their history and legacy. Their kindness stands out, they smile posing for us and enjoying dresses from the time of that culture that is not lost here remains, in everything, in those walls and in those towers that can be seen from different points.

Different panoramic views and sets of structures: walls, towers and arches of covered streets that, like a time tunnel, take us to another part of such a beautiful town.

Quiet streets under the blue sky and a radiant light that further embellishes this surprising environment. Serene churches, mountain houses, the clock on the tower and the country's flag remind us of where we are and that it was worth getting here. Everywhere we look we see a beautiful image, we see again greener, more trees, more mountains, and again the river, with fresh, clean and transparent water, and we can only hear its current passing through the stones, while we walk the outskirts and turn around, another bridge allows us to continue through this kind of natural historical living museum.

We go down a path in a green meadow as if we were in a scenario that turns out to be real, very real, with big trees too. And we feel like we are part of that story, because this trip becomes a tale in a green charming place.

And we leave the same way we arrived, in silence with our mouths open, with beautiful memories and shiny postcards in our minds. Back on the train we are accompanied by the same views that greeted us, more green surroundings, more orange roofs in the distance and more in the distance those white mountains that become the perfect setting for such a beautiful picture. I don't know if it was a trip to a charming town, or part of a story in the middle of the green mountains of Slovenia.

(Now from the train, we continue traveling and it will be time to also visit the beautiful capital, Ljubljana, to be continued...)

Skofja Loka, Slovenia

Yeah that language (those slavic languages are so difficult) but in Spanish it reminds me to: "Sofía loca" (loca means crazy so Sophie the crazy) 🤣 !LOLZ

It's hard for me to imagine what people, the inhabitants of this city, experience when the river becomes full-flowing after the snow melts, but the view is very beautiful :)

Well the town is there still, probably they are used to that every year, it was spring and the river was nice, full of water but in balance... but it's interesting to think in that same place also in other seasons! Sure always charming 😊 !PIZZA

I love the bridge construction in Škofja Loka. it looks the same as construction in Venice, Italy where tourists can go down the river by boat.

I also like people there, are they wearing traditional clothes? looks so colorful.

great post, thanks for sharing

Yes well in fact that place is not very far from Venice! Actually I went to Slovenia by train from there. Probably some similar influence... and people were very kind in that moment they were wearing medieval clothes yes, because they were representing a traditional dance in that castle, in normal days they wear normal clothes but I was lucky to see them like this! Thanks a lot thanks for the support have a great day! 🤗
