Santander: Cabo Mayor Lighthouse (VIII)

Hello Pinmapple friends!

Today we come to the end of the route through the city of Santander, a city in the north of Spain, which constantly looks with strength and desire towards the Cantabrian Sea. There the winds change direction in different directions and the citizens already used to it know when the day will be good or bad.

To verify this, it is best to go almost to the outskirts to the extreme northeast, at the last point of the city, although it does not seem that we are already in the city, which is worth a visit. It is the Cabo Mayor Lighthouse, the best symbol to end this series of articles of a city that lives so intensely the sea.

This lighthouse is an architectural symbol, since it is almost 200 years old. Built in 1839, it continues to function today, giving light and thus controlling all the maritime routes that pass by nearby. An immense stone mass of 30 meters on a cliff of another 60 meters draws attention from afar. That is its function.

Although there are more, currently, in addition to being the most visible element at the entrance to Santander Bay, it also has exhibition rooms inside, all on a theme related to the sea, and there is also another building outside, one of them It is a famous bar, where you can have a drink while the air hits us, the strong wind on many occasions. But you breathe the sea.

The sea present in its greatest splendor, sometimes furious and brave, not always bright because the clouds make the area acquire a very northern air, but also special, we feel the force of nature at its most extreme point. On the last rocks of the coast, perched on a cliff where the great waves of this lively and wild sea collide with impetus and perseverance.

But there are also memories, not always pleasant, there are tribute monuments, of those people who one day lost their lives on those shores. And nothing sadder than war, because the Spanish civil war 1936-1939 even reached this area. Precisely where that dramatic figure stands, there those of the Republican side (this was part of their area) threw the Nationals of the other side into the sea. As we know in wars, there are always horrors on both sides, and I would say that both sides are always losers in something, in human lives, always.

We remember, with respect. To then look to the other side, we see more of the sea and also the beach, Mataleñas beach because there we have another small beach, which must be very nice on a sunny summer day, and even so now we see some brave people or those who are used to walking because like this it's your city. We're still in the city, even if it doesn't seem like it, right?

Even looking back there is a kind of forest, or park in which we see ropes that go from tree to tree, then as we pass we discover that they are zip lines, and adventure games between trees.

The truth is that we found many things, where it almost seems to be almost nothing, more than a lot of sea of course and also a lot of green, this is the region that we will discover soon, we already left the city to see some of the most beautiful towns in all Spain.

More about Santander and its surroundings in the region of Cantabria soon!

What a stunning views of the sea! Historical moments are sad, but should be remembered with respect, as you said.

Thanks dear! But history is a lesson to not repeat the same... and in the meantime we enjoy the sea, that sound and smell 🌊
