Rimini: Italian charming with churches, castles and much more than a beach

Sometimes we walk through other places without great expectations, simply thinking about a few things, about relaxing and maybe seeing something interesting. But there are places that surprise us when we visite them.

This happens in an Italian coastal city, famous for its beaches. Rimini is a very popular place in summer for its large beaches and summer resorts, and when we think of this city in the Emilia-Romagna region on the coast of the Adriatic Sea we think of vacations. But when we arrive and the weather is not good, outside the tourist station we discover that there is much more.

And for all of us who love architecture and history, suddenly without expecting it we find ourselves in that short space of time there with a multitude of impressive Renaissance churches, medieval castles and Roman arches between busy squares with charming fountains. A delight of a place that we had ignored.

Despite the short time available, there was the opportunity to discover curious buildings and beautiful facades, robust fortifications and urban spaces that combine different styles from different periods of history. Fascinating.

Possibly the most important building, well, one of them is the cathedral basilica of the city, this Renaissance building I think, is called the Malatestiano Temple with an elegant but discreet white façade with Corinthian columns on the sides. A symmetrical inspiration.

Upon entering the space is spacious, although dark and I did not get good photos but without a doubt I had to photograph a famous painting by an ancient renowned Italian painter: Piero della Francesca, but the rest of the decoration around that can be seen, golden inscriptions on the marbled wall and others details are exquisite.

Another wonderful church that deserves our attention is strange, the façade has nothing to do with it and I think it is older. A peculiar façade without a doubt, reminiscent of that of the Palazzo dei Diamanti (Diamons Palace) in Ferrara, although this one is not as spectacular and I don't know if the protuberances evoke diamonds either, but it certainly stands out among others. Also its interior decoration, niches and golden inscriptions on the marbled wall. It is called the Church of San Francisco Saverio.

Now we leave the churches for the moment to continue walking to a tower that reminds me of another, it is also another clock tower (Torre dell'Orologio) like the one in Padua that brings back so many memories but in different squares and in another city, of course.

And from there to another square, very busy with local people, Cavour Square where we realize the fusion of architectural styles and different historical periods.

Nearby we discovered a picturesque fountain, with a pine cone at the top and, as we turned, a gallery of arches that stands out in the urban panorama. It is a place that they used to sell fish, like a market, it is called the Vecchia Pescheria (the old fishmonger) and it also concentrates the people who pass by here.

We still have places left, medieval towers, and even a large fortified castle. It is the Sismondo Castle with a strong medieval stone wall around it.

So yes, the city of Rimini is much more than its beaches and entertainment venues, but as we approach the marina area, ecco! Another church, smaller and more charming but also pretty, right? The parish of Santa Maria Ausiliatrice.

And before we leave, a statue, a tribute to the soldiers who fell in the war, as it says there, and girls eating ice cream, Italian ice cream, the perfect topic.

And then we also reach the sea, on a day that becomes cloudier but allows us to see the entire horizon practically alone. It is very strange to see this place empty like this, and in bad weather, but sometimes we also like something different and new, a curious feeling there...

Furthermore, thanks to it being out of season, we were able to enjoy an interesting walk through the historic center of Rimini and discovered part of its history and its impressive architectural legacy, so rich and varied.
A beautiful or "bella" surprise.
