Ferrara: Italian palatial elegance from another time

Hello archi lovers!

A new inspiring walk full of beauty, art, architecture, design and history. All united in one place, in a beautiful and elegant city of Italy, called Ferrara.

Like many of these cities, some of which I have already shared here, it once again makes us marvel at so many beautiful and wonderful buildings, built in other times past that still today, even more so, seem like a work of art to us.

And in Ferrara there is much to see, many buildings, places, and monuments, from different periods and styles, but all of them make our visit an incredible experience to enjoy with all our senses.

Castle and Fortress of the Este (dynasty/family)

We start in the center, where the most remarkable and admirable thing is undoubtedly an imposing castle, in the middle of the city, with a tower, courtyard, and surrounding space with water as a defense, incredible, because it seems that everything remains the same.

It was a place of power, of one of the many Italian families that dominated some of the most famous cities of yesteryear. And somehow everything still looks powerful and impressive.

Piazza Trento e Trieste (Square)

From the castle we quickly reach the adjoining square, very popular and visited, a wonderful place. A square that houses countless beautiful facades, Renaissance palaces, while the people of the city gather there, surrounded by architecture and beautiful history at dusk.

Cathedral of Ferrara

And also close, because everything is close, a white jewel. The Cathedral of Ferrara is undoubtedly magnificent, and just seeing it leaves us speechless. We look at the thousand and one details of its elegant decorations before going inside.

The interior is dark but we are speechless, ceilings painted in an incredible way, golden, profuse and baroque decorations that envelop everything in a mystical and intoxicating air. An artistic ecstasy.

Palazzo Schifanoia (Palace)

A curious place, of which I unfortunately cannot share more than a visit to the interior. An important palace although from the outside it does not seem so important. But its decorations and frescoes inside are, and are very interesting, especially those of the different signs of the zodiac along with the seasons, like a large room of astrological time.
Here only the façade, to see more you have to come to Ferrara.

Palazzo dei Diamanti (Palace of Diamonds)

Now we come to perhaps my favorite place, a façade that is undoubtedly unique and spectacular, I love it.
Another palace, but this one is different, a Renaissance palace with a white marble façade in the shape of successive and multiple diamonds, an avant-garde effect of the time and very striking, while at the same time remaining elegant, in keeping with the style of the city itself.

University and other corners

An important element of the city is the university, famous and with some interesting inner courtyards and historical buildings. We walked through some streets, curiously looking around, but also finding some other churches as well.

Ghetto (streets)

We continue walking, because there is an interesting neighborhood, well actually, in many of its streets we can find signs of the past, of another past, of the time when a large Jewish population resided in the city. There are many synagogues, in its oldest streets, and we enjoy the charm of the urban architecture of the past.

Around the wall

And an urban element that was once essential in cities was the wall that surrounded them. We can follow the path along its diameter, coming across other monuments, a beautiful column and in those parts where the walk becomes pleasant, converted into urban natural paths, we enjoy other views of Ferrara.
Until we reach the train station again, where we are struck by the number of parked bicycles.

Thus we leave Ferrara, a beautiful Italian city with an ancient, elegant and fantastic air.

Sí es bonita, y pese a algunos lugares con más gente como en la plaza, los paseos fueron muy agradables, una ciudad placentera 🥰

Thanks! Yeah the castle is cool, in the central area with water around, I did not take photos of the patio inside but similar medieval style. Maybe someday you can visit some of them who knows...

Sometimes I think that making a building like that definitely requires a lot of time and money. Creating masterpieces and like things that are helped by magic.
