Evanston: discovering houses, a temple and more surprises

Hello archi lovers!

Once again, a place that deserves our attention, we always pay attention not only to the obvious but also to the details, the environment and everything that embellishes it. And it seems that in many places we can find points of interest, especially for those of us who like architecture and design.

So now we are not looking at a small charming town that is located to the north, very close to Chicago (yes, I have finished the series of posts about Chicago, but still a nearby place to explore and discover). This time it's Evanston.

The pleasure of discovering new wonderful and unexpected corners. A very pleasant walk to a mainly residential town, which can even be reached by subway! Last stops.

Evanston, IL (USA)

And as soon as we arrive after walking a bit, we realize how green everything is. There is a lot of vegetation and not only from golf courses but from many trees around us. And among the trees we discover all that residential area in which large stylish American houses appear like the ones we have seen on television, with fantastic designs, some with a porch, another with Corinthian columns or even with some statues at the entrance. All great.

Without realizing it, we also ended up in front of a royal, elegant and beautiful fountain on a well-kept lawn and again surrounded by leafy trees, we also ran into again a lot of flowers. Can you imagine living in such a peaceful, colorful and beautiful environment? The walk was relaxing.

More relaxing until reaching a canal in which many boats swayed with the slight movement of the water, surely waiting for their owners, who would most likely be the owners of the houses we had seen.

But the most shocking thing was looking up and suddenly seeing a temple. What is that? A temple with an architectural style that did not seem to have anything to do with all of the above, as if it had fallen from heaven. A beautiful white oriental-style building that seemed to be calling us towards it.

We approached caressing all that white stone to find out that it was a Baha'ï Temple, they told us a lot about that religious belief (some will call it a sect, I don't know), among all that, it turns out that there are seven temples scattered around the world. For example, another one of them is the Lotus Temple in Delhi, India, which I had also seen by chance. And this one very charming, surrounded by some trees and water, small ponds that gave it an even magical air. And the building is wonderful, there are parts in the upper area where the white stone seems to be delicate lace cloth with all those detailed decorations.

We left not converted or convinced but surprised and amazed. And we continued walking, once again the path led us into more trees and suddenly a small hermitage that reminded me of many Romanesque-style hermitages in Europe, again another disparate element in an environment that does not seem to be the usual one but that yet eclectically everything seems to fit together peacefully.

As well as the last amazing building we come across, another classical building, almost like a British church, with an even more gothic touch, impressive tower. This time it is not a big house, but the Northwestern University that also seems taken from another place and another time.

And time was running out, so we finished the route near more water, but now Lake Michigan itself, and there a beach, which made the whole atmosphere feel even more relaxed, and we turned looking south and into the distance, far away, the always unforgettable silhouette of the city of Chicago that seems to be waiting for us after that day of surprising discoveries in Evanston.

Evanston, Illinois, US

Thanks so much for reading! Have an amazing and surprising day.

Loved the temple that is unique. At first I thought it might be a capital building building but Springfield is the capital. Beautiful pictures I love the growth on the houses.

Oh of course a lot in New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Almost all of my family is in those states. My immediate family moved to the Midwest right before I was born because of a job opportunity for my father. Saying that it's been awhile since I've made it out East

Hi @duvinca, you made a great tour, this place is a real paradise with many green areas that invite to relax and rest; from the houses to the lake, everything fits in perfect harmony with the environment, the city of Chicago has beautiful places; I liked the detail of the roof of the dome is similar to a lace, which gives a very delicate style to this construction, thanks for sharing such nice images.

    Greetings!

Wow, I am sincerely amazed with so much beauty, no doubt as you say, these photos are like out of TV.

I would love to live in a place as quiet and peaceful as that. If there is one thing I liked is how different designs converge and fit the place perfectly.

From the temple I really liked the upper part that looks like a lace, I think it is a very well done job, from the hermitage I liked its simplicity and from the university, it reminded me a little of Westminster Abbey that stands superbly in the middle of that place.

Wow, I really liked everything in this post, I thank you for taking the time to do something so detailed for all of us.

Very nice analysis 👌 yes the different styles fit in harmony in that pleasant and peaceful environment. It was so quite... a very relaxing walk and the beautiful temple was really a lovely surprise. Great comparison, the University looks like Westminster abbey, yes, that British classic neogothic style also present obviously in the US. And all that, all together in that same place, Evanston! Thanks a lot, wonderful comment 🥰🙏
