Imitating Film Imitating Life

Rabbit trails... The internet is so good at sending us down paths that usually lead to nothing (or cat videos). On rare occasions it sends me down a good hole. Such was yesterday's run into "Film Recipes".

It started innocently enough, a listen to the most recent episode of the "All Through a Lens" podcast led to the page of one of the featured artists, which led to something called "film soup".

This is not film soup

Apparently, film soup involves boiling exposed film in pretty much any chemical to create random artsy fartsy effects. This is pretty controversial I guess, because to some it seems like a gimmick. I honestly don't have the time to be a snob and tell people what is or isn't art, so more power to those who use this technique. Maybe I'll try it some day.

Anywho, while researching film soup, I found something that I was only vaguely aware of before. It is possible to tweak the settings of a digital SLR to mimic various film stocks. Geeks call the various tweaks "recipes" and it only takes a Google search or two to find them for your own camera.

Thankfully for my Nikon, someone has created a site with loadable presets mimicking a few dozen films. I downloaded a few Kodak stocks and Fuji stocks and loaded them into the camera. Oddly enough they all showed up in the camera as Kodak, so who knows. I downloaded three, but only ended up using two of them: Kodachrome (all the color shots) and T-Max 400 (all the black and white).

I realized last night that I tend to work in very dark places. I don't get many usable results, but I enjoy the challenge. There was another guy in the bar last night with a big DSLR who asked "Have you figured out what settings to use in here?" Poor guy, running around flashing everyone. I told him crank the ISO and shoot wide open. Can't go wrong with that.

Well, maybe not... But it seemed to make sense.

And yes, we went to an animé bar on St. Patty's Day. They had green saké. And a cosplay contest. And we did sing some Irish songs at Karaoke.
