Sunday Walk in Ikole-Ekiti: Red Millipedes Everywhere Since The Rains Started

avatar

Greetings Ecencyals and Hivers, I hope your Sunday is going great.

I had no plans to draw or work on comic pages today. Instead I took a walk around Ikole-Ekiti to clear my head and just observe.

The main thing I kept running into was this red “100-legged” millipede. They’ve been showing up a lot more since the rains started. You’ll find them under grasses, crawling on walls, or tucked beside rocks like these ones.

I was lucky to catch these three together. Two of them looked like they were mating, so I tried not to disturb them. I probably shifted the light or got too close because I flinched, but they hadn’t separated when I walked away. The third one was just off to the side, doing its own thing.

The red and black bands on them are so sharp. They move slow but deliberate. You can see all the little legs working if you crouch down and watch. They curl into a spiral when they feel threatened, but these ones seemed comfortable.

Millipedes aren’t harmful. They don’t bite or sting. They’re just out here breaking down dead leaves and helping the soil. The rain draws them out — wet ground makes it easier for them to move and find mates, I think.

No art or process post today. Just me, my phone, and a quiet moment with these guys before heading back in.

Have a nice week guys. Thanks for viewing❤️
