A ROAD TRIP TO OYO TOWN - A HARD NUT TO PEEL

The town of Oyo is a historically prominent town in the Southwestern region of Nigeria.
It is located in Oyo State and unlike it's suster town, Iseyin which is closely related to the hills of Oke Ogun, Oyo Town is predominantly plain ground with a few elevated grounds.

Oyo Town is home to one of the most important monarchs in the history of the Yoruba Kimgdom - His Royal Majesty, The Aláàfin of Oyo.

In the past Oyo kingdom was one of the most powerful kingdoms even having influence beyond the Southwestern borders.

It has however remained only historically significant through the years, with very little industrial developments coming ro the place.

The landscapes are still partly green and flat, with very little to almost no industrial infrastructures.

I took a trip today to Oyo on field research work and took pictures on our way to this town before going full gear into field work mode.

I was initially hesitant about taking my camera along with me because I felt there might not be any much interesting scenes on the way.

But an experience is always an experience so I took it along and captured some shots along the journey to Oyo and back.

SCENES ON OUR WAY BACK AS WE RE-ENTERED IBADAN

1180892.jpg
Nissan Micra Taxis are the signature of highway driving craze in Ibadan. Once you see them, you know you are in Ibadan

1180890.jpg
You can already see some tall structures as you enter Ibadan, unlike Oyo Town. This is the Ojoo Bus Terminal Tower, towering above a bridge in the distance

1180847 (1).jpg
I got a very lucky shot of this picture as the rains gathered and the sun rays peeked through the clouds. This was easily one of my best highlights of the day

5s4dzRwnVbzGY5ssnCE4wXzkeAEXyVtgk1ApQTwHMTp6y5PvEo1yennCKQRd5YWCghPoAXpZRoCcQQNkoWiDbGAa5JexMx3d4by9Cm8dcCUTKwLBfeZbqt6y583ACJMuTQ6VWomYjuJWSReV2JM1mVg6vKGRe23pKXgEzhU.png

I hope you enjoyed the scenes of my journey from Ibadan to Oyo Town. It's not that breath-taking as I couldn't find spectacular sights. It was a hard nut to peel to find great pictures especially because the vehicle I was in was not going to stop.
But the pictures are somewhat a reflection of what the scenes on a road trip in this part of the world really looks like.
Thank you for reading!

I can't even write in a moving car, I wonder how good your skills must have been mastered to take these on a road trip.

Oyo town is very historical got a lot of things as you have well stated.

Your pictures are very very depicting of the real state of that place.

It is sad that it has a poor industrial infrastructure tho.
This was the place that was really promising back in the days for it to host the monarchs of the land.

Does it go well to say that culture and tradition did not support the spread of civilization?

I can't write in a moving car too😅.
The fact that I was using a professional camera helped. The shutter speed was set to about 2000ths of a second so that I'll be able to capture non-blurry images.

My sitting position was funny too cos I had to face the window for some shots.

Then sometimes I just did point-and-burst-shoot without looking at the viewfinder😅. I had to select the usable images at the end of the day.

It's not really about culture and tradition although that would contribute a little. It's more about political issues. Attention has been long diverted from developing Oyo as a town for a long while.

I visited their General Hospital and it was a sore to the eye.
Skeletal facilities, little manpower.
Even the Tertiary annexe planned to be erected has been abandoned for years now.

And the health burden keeps increasing each day.

Wow.. but then .. isn't the Governor aware o this. Or does this political thing you speak of elude him. I ve been there too and it's really an eye sore to the developing Ibadan if to compare.

It's not about the incumbent Governor. It's an accumulated thing. He is doing well to revuve the place, but the changes can't be significant. They won't be even beyond his tenure.
That region needs at least 10 years of focused energy to bring it to speed with Ibadan.

When I saw the pictures, My first reaction was "this cant be phone photography. They are too good to be taken while looking through the eye of a phone lens.

Anyways, good work man! Glad to be back here seeing your good work...

Inspiring the artist in me...lol

Yeah. The 2 biggest problems with mobile photography are:

  • pronounced digitalisation and
  • oversharpening.

There's a fakeness to the sense of depth on phone cameras because of the efforts of computerised photography in giving a "supposed" best look. And the limitations are largely due to the small sensor they have.

Asides that, smartphones especially these days do SO WELL with both photography and videography.

Sometimes I actually prefer smartphone shots in some shooting scenarios.

It's good to see you back!!
Thanks for checking in.

Did you train yourself in Photography, or you had a mentor?
You seem to know a great deal about it.

I learnt on my own.
Started with Videography. I actually know a lot more in Videography than Photography.
I do some profesional videography and Cinematography.

What beautiful fertile land. I like hilly roads. Shame about all the plastic trash. This is a world-wide problem, plastic, that needs an urgent solution.

The Oyo Empire was featured in a recent movie "Woman King", so I'm sure many have now heard of it.

Quite fertile land, some of them still virgin.
The plastic problem is very poorly managed here.
Ohh... I should see the movie!
