Greetings, dear community, today I am going to tell you about one of the traditions of the state of Trujillo, specifically of the town of Betijoque, which I had the opportunity to visit in the month of November and therefore I had the opportunity to attend one of these traditions that take place in this town.

The tradition takes place on the third Saturday of the month of November and consists of venerating Saint Benedict of Palermo through drumming, this lasts almost all day, as it consists of playing the drum leaving the village where initially they do it in the houses where deceased drummers lived, from there they go to a site a little removed from the population called the trenches where there is a church where the image of the saint is located, which this time there were three images of Saint Benedict of Palermo.

Saludos, estimada comunidad, hoy les voy a contar una de las tradiciones del estado Trujillo, específicamente de la población de Betijoque, la cual estuve la oportunidad de visitar en este mes de noviembre y por lo cual estuve la oportunidad de asistir a una de estas tradiciones que se efectúan en esta población.

La tradición se realiza el tercer sábado del mes de noviembre y consiste en venerar a san Benito de Palermo mediante toques de tambor, esto dura casi todo el día, ya que consiste en tocar el tambor saliendo del poblado donde inicialmente lo realizan en las casas donde habitaban tamboreros ya fallecidos, desde allí se dirigen aún sitio un poco retirado de la población que se llama las trincheras donde se encuentra una iglesia que es donde está la imagen del santo, que en esta oportunidad había tres imágenes de san Benito de Palermo.

This site of the trenches where the church is in the front there is a large space like a large square, there remain gathered the different groups of drummers, while one of them honors the saint playing inside the church, so they take turns and each one has its time to play to the saint inside the church and thus continue the honors.

Of all the groups that played there were three groups responsible for taking each of the three images to take it in procession playing the drum to the town of Betijoque where the church is located, this is how, at about 4 pm enters the small church one of the groups responsible for taking the first image that would be the last in the procession, they play their drums for a while and go out playing and dancing with the first image of the saint, then enters the second group plays and leaves with the second image of the saint.

Este sitio de las trincheras donde está la iglesia en el frente existe un espacio grande como una gran plaza, allí permanecen reunidos las diferentes agrupaciones de tamboreros, mientras una de ellas le hace honor al santo tocando dentro de la iglesia, así se van turnando y cada una tiene su tiempo para tocarle al santo dentro de la iglesia y de esta manera continúan los honores.

De todas las agrupaciones que tocaban existían tres responsables de sacar cada una de las tres imágenes para llevarla en procesión tocando el tambor hasta la población de Betijoque en donde se encuentra la iglesia, es así, como a eso de las 4 de la tarde entra a la pequeña iglesia una de las agrupaciones responsable de sacar la primera imagen que sería la va de última en la procesión, tocan un buen rato sus tambores y salen tocando y bailando con la primera imagen del santo, después entra la segunda agrupación toca y sale con la segunda imagen del santo.

Then, the third group enters, responsible for taking out the third image and it can be said that the main one, since this image was the one that was placed in front to start the procession to the village, this procession is carried out for a long stretch where after the main image the other images and the different groups of drums that existed are placed, In this case I counted about 7 groups of drums that were placed to make this journey, which by the way is quite colorful because people are dancing along the way, and this somehow helps the tour does not tire the people, which, on the contrary, go with great spirit and enthusiasm celebrating these religious customs of the area.
Seguidamente, entra la tercera agrupación responsable de sacar la tercera imagen y se puede decir que la principal, ya que esta imagen fue la que se colocó adelante para iniciar la procesión hasta el poblado, esa procesión se realiza por un largo trecho donde después de la imagen principal se van situando las demás imágenes y los diferentes grupos de tambores que existían, que para este caso conté unas 7 agrupaciones de tambores que se ubicaron para realizar este recorrido, que por cierto es bastante colorido porque las personas van bailando a lo largo del trayecto, y esto de alguna manera ayuda a que el recorrido no canse a las personas, que, por el contrario, van con mucho ánimo y entusiasmo celebrando estas costumbres religiosas de la zona.

Todo ese recorrido fue culminando como a las 8 de la noche con muchas personas acompañando las imágenes a lo largo del recorrido, la verdad que tengo entendido que esta es una tradición de muchos años y la realizan todos los años, también las realizan en diciembre, pero bueno allí veremos si tengo la oportunidad de volver al sitio para compartirles esos eventos tradicionales.
