Park Hotel . Merida, Venezuela Eng-Esp

Hello, hello, dear friends of architecture and design. Once again, I am happy to have the opportunity to share with you, a new architectural experience in my city.

A few days ago I was walking through the Glorias Patrias sector of the city of Merida and I remembered this beautiful building that, thanks to its design and structural configuration, was always a reference for my university professors when it came to seismic engineering.

It is the Park Hotel, a hotel that represents a great milestone in the region's tourism, the favorite of many tourists for decades. A building that boosted modern and contemporary architecture in this colonial city.

The Park Hotel has always caught my attention and years ago I used to visit one of its lounges, in the company of my sister, who liked to go to play bingo. On this occasion, I did not have the opportunity to enter, but its interior is neat and very nice.

It is a large hotel with more than 100 rooms. Currently, the white of its facade, gives it a great visual aspect, minimalist and elegant.

The hotel has 08 floors or levels, with a staggered volumetric design, where the lower floors are of less size. This makes me think about how it works structurally, taking into account that the center of gravity is different on each floor.

Merida is located in a seismic zone, therefore, in every construction it is vital to take into consideration how the structure can respond to seismic movements and this totally influences the design of each element, because in addition to the aesthetics of a building, safety is paramount. It is evident that the design presents what we call geometric irregularity, which can make it vulnerable, so it would be very interesting to study its behavior.

This building is made of reinforced concrete and as we can see in this photo, the mezzanine slab is of the cassette type. This type of slab is very light, which is positive.

Another thing that strikes me about this design is that the stairwell is outside the building and even looks like an annex to it.

I like that the windows have a frame that protrudes from the wall, and I can imagine that the view from the upper floors is spectacular, because in front we have the imposing mountains of the Sierra Nevada and in recent months nature has given us an incredible visual spectacle, which certainly should be better appreciated from that location.

This hotel not only offers lodging, it is the ideal place for congresses and conventions, as well as several restaurants and entertainment centers. I understand that it was closed for a few years, but it is currently fully operational.

Its location is ideal, since it is close to downtown and many important institutions. In addition, in front we find the Glorias Patrias square, where we enjoy this concrete sculpture, which represents a soccer ball and was built, according to its plaque, in 1981 as a tribute to all the players of this beautiful sport.

It was a pleasure to share this building that makes me very curious about its structural configuration, but that I also like to admire because it is a design that breaks the schemes and surely they took into account all the necessary safety specifications in its design and execution, or at least I hope so.

Hola, hola, queridos amigos de arquitectura y diseño. Una vez más, estoy feliz de tener la oportunidad de compartir con ustedes, una nueva experiencia arquitectónica en mi ciudad.

Hace unos días caminaba por el sector Glorias Patrias de la ciudad de Mérida y recordé este hermoso edificio que, gracias a su diseño y configuración estructural, siempre fue referencia de mis profesores de la Universidad, cuando de ingeniería sísmica se trataba.

Se trata del Hotel Park, un hotel que representa un gran hito en el turismo de la región, el preferido de muchos turistas, desde hace décadas. Un edificio que impulsó la arquitectura moderna y contemporánea en esta ciudad colonial.

El hotel Park siempre me ha llamado la atención y hace años solía visitar uno de sus salones, en compañía de mi hermana, a quien le gustaba ir a jugar bingo. En esta ocasión, no tuve la oportunidad de entrar, pero su interior es prolijo y muy bonito.

Es un hotel grande con más de 100 habitaciones. Actualmente, el blanco de su fachada, le da un gran aspecto visual, minimalista y elegante.

El Hotel tiene 08 pisos o niveles, con un diseño volumétrico escalonado, donde las plantas inferiores son de menos tamaño. Esto me hace pensar, en cómo funciona estructuralmente, teniendo en cuenta que el centro de gravedad es distinto en cada piso.

Mérida, está ubicada en una zona sísmica, por ende, en cada construcción es vital tomar en consideración, cómo puede responder la estructura ante movimientos sísmicos y esto influye totalmente en el diseño de cada elemento, pues además de la estética de un edificio, la seguridad es primordial. Es evidente, que el diseño presenta lo que llamamos irregularidad geométrica, lo que puede llegar a hacerlo vulnerable, por eso sería muy interesante estudiar su comportamiento.

Este edificio es de concreto armado y como podemos ver en esta foto, la losa de entrepiso es de tipo casetón. Este tipo de losa es muy ligera, algo que resulta positivo.

Otra cosa, que me llama la atención de este diseño, es que el núcleo de escaleras está afuera del edificio e incluso parece un anexo de él.

Me gusta que las ventanas tienen un marco que sobresale de la pared, además puedo imaginar que la vista de los pisos superiores es espectacular, pues al frente tenemos las imponentes montañas de la sierra nevada y en los últimos meses la naturaleza nos ha regalado un espectáculo visual increíble, que sin duda, se debe apreciar mejor desde esa ubicación.

Este hotel no solo ofrece alojamiento, es el lugar ideal para congresos y convenciones, además encontramos varios restaurantes y centros de entretenimiento. Tengo entendido que estuvo cerrado algunos años, pero actualmente está en pleno funcionamiento.

Su ubicación es ideal, ya que está cerca del centro y de muchas instituciones importantes. Además, al frente encontramos la plaza Glorias Patrias, donde disfrutamos de esta escultura en concreto, la cual representa un balón de fútbol y fue construido, según dice su placa, en 1981 en homenaje a todos los jugadores de este bonito deporte.

Fue un placer compartir este edificio que me causa mucha curiosidad en cuanto a su configuración estructural, pero que también me gusta admirar porque es un diseño que rompe los esquemas y seguramente tomaron en cuenta todas las especificaciones de seguridad necesarias en su diseño y ejecución, o al menos eso espero.
