Architecture is also present in sports centers and these are full of history, anecdotes and a lot of emotion. Today I am happy to share with you one of the historic places of Merida's sports. It is the Guillermo Soto Rosa Olympic Stadium, located in the Campo de Oro sector of the city of Merida.

A few days ago I had the opportunity to visit its facilities after some years and I was very pleased to see that it is in very good condition. I had several years without entering its facilities, which in a way felt as if it was the first time, but at the same time memories came to me, of that time when I trained Karate do and we often came here to jog.

This stadium is named in honor of an outstanding soccer player from Merida. It was inaugurated in 1969, according to this blog I found on the web, where you can read more about its history. It is located in the Campo de Oro sector and can be accessed from Av. 16 de Septiembre or from Av. Humberto Tejeras.

This front, with columns of classic architecture, welcomes you. The same blog tells us that it is the work of the Colombian architect Marco León Mariño, this is the main entrance to the stadium, but in reality it is rarely used and requires maintenance.

Upon entering, you find the back of one of the grandstands; below them, we have this gallery of arches with the colors of our national flag, where administrative offices, a cafeteria and restrooms are located. Here we can see the huge reinforced concrete columns and beams, which are responsible for supporting all the weight, the proper design of these structures is essential, because they support a huge live load, when the stadium is full of people, a public that also tends to be active, where they jump and get carried away by the passion for the sport. Ensuring safety is paramount, and if this is combined with a beautiful aesthetic, so much the better, don't you think?

The structure of the stadium blends perfectly with the natural environment that surrounds it, and there are also green areas and planters that fill the place with color.

The roof cover has an inverted butterfly shape, supported by a set of metal trusses, it also has excellent lighting and access to the bleachers is very comfortable, since it has several entrances, all secured with metal railings.

This stadium is the training home of the Merida soccer team called Estudiantes de Merida, here we notice some of their logos and a series of plaques where in each one there is a year, part of the shield and the word Estudiantes, I'm not sure what it represents, but possibly these years marked an important milestone in the history of this team and this sports center.

One of my favorite parts, and one that is often seen from afar, are the huge lighting towers. These red and white headlights, whose colors represent this team, really catch my eye.

This is what the playing field and what is also an athletics track look like, the grass is a beautiful, natural green, in good condition, combined with sand. The bleachers, some of them, are not covered with the roof. But the steps have a good height. At the back we see the other grandstand, which has a VIP area, where the press and radio are also located. The playing field is extensive and meets the requirements of this sport.

Our visit to the stadium left us with very gratifying and exciting experiences, where my passion for architecture and engineering also had its place, because if we look around us, we are surrounded by it, in addition to these beautiful mountains that enhance any work.

La arquitectura también está presente en los centros deportivos y estos están llenos de historia, anécdotas y mucha emoción. Hoy estoy feliz de compartir con ustedes uno de los lugares históricos del deporte merideño. Se trata del Estadio Olímpico Guillermo Soto Rosa, ubicado en el sector Campo de Oro, de la ciudad de Mérida.

Hace días tuve la oportunidad de visitar sus instalaciones después de algunos años y me dio mucho gusto ver, que se encuentra en muy buen estado. Tenía varios años sin entrar a sus instalaciones, que en cierta manera se sintió como si fuese la primera vez, pero al mismo tiempo vinieron recuerdos a mí, de esa época en que entrenaba Karate do y veníamos con frecuencia a trotar aquí.

Este estadio lleva ese nombre en honor a un destacado futbolista merideño. Fue inaugurado en 1969, según este blog que encontré en la web, donde puedes leer más de su historia. Está ubicado en el sector Campo de Oro y se puede acceder desde la Av. 16 de septiembre o desde la Av. Humberto Tejeras.

Este frente, con columnas de arquitectura clásicas, te dan la bienvenida. En ese mismo blog nos cuenta que es obra del arquitecto colombiano Marco León Mariño, esta es la entrada principal al estadio, pero en realidad se usa muy poco y requiere mantenimiento.

Al entrar, te encuentras con la parte posterior de una de las tribunas; debajo de ellas, tenemos esta galería de arcos con los colores de nuestra bandera nacional, donde funcionan oficinas administrativas, un cafetín y los baños. Aquí podemos ver, las enormes columnas y vigas de concreto armado, que son las encargadas de soportar todo el peso, el diseño adecuado de estas estructuras es fundamental, porque soportan una carga viva enorme, cuando el estadio se encuentra lleno de gente, un público que además suele ser activo, donde saltan y se dejan llevar por la pasión por el deporte. Garantizar la seguridad es lo primordial y si esta se combina con una estética bonita mucho mejor, ¿no creen?

La estructura del estadio se conjuga perfectamente con el entorno natural que lo rodea, además existen zonas verdes y jardineras que llenan de color el lugar.

La cubierta del techo, tiene una forma de mariposa invertida, sostenida con un conjunto de cerchas metálicas, además posee excelente iluminación y el acceso a las gradas es muy cómodo, ya que tiene diversas entradas, todas aseguradas con barandas metálicas.

Este estadio es la casa de entrenamiento del equipo de futbol merideño llamado Estudiantes de Mérida, aquí notamos algunos de sus logos y una serie de placas donde en cada uno existe un año, parte del escudo y la palabra Estudiantes, no estoy segura de que representa, pero posiblemente estos años marcaron un hito importante en la historia de este equipo y de este centro deportivo.

Una de mis partes favoritas y que se suelen ver desde lejos, son las inmensas torres de iluminación. Estos faros en rojo y blanco, cuyos colores representan este equipo, me llaman mucho la atención.

Así luce el campo de juego y lo que también es una pista para atletismo, la grama tiene un verde precioso, natural, en buen estado, combinado con arena. Las gradas, algunas, no son cubiertas con el techo. Pero los escalones, tienen buena altura. Al fondo vemos la otra tribuna, la cual tiene un espacio vip, donde también ubican a la prensa y la radio. El campo de juego es extenso y cumple con los requisitos que exige este deporte.

Nuestra visita al estadio nos dejó experiencias muy gratificantes y emocionantes, donde mi pasión por la arquitectura y la ingeniería también tuvo su lugar, pues si miramos a nuestro alrededor, estamos rodeados de ella, además de estas bellas montañas que enaltecen cualquier obra.
