A stroll through the gateway to the villages of southern Mérida, “Estanques.” Eng-Esp

On a warm morning, we arrived in Estanques after approximately an hour and a half of traveling by road. Arriving in this small town always fills me with excitement because, for me, it means only one thing: that my parents' embrace is getting closer and closer.

Estanques is known as the gateway to the southern towns, marking the beginning of a route that takes us to different towns in the municipalities of Sucre and Arzobispo Chacón in Mérida. Although it is a very small town, it is of great commercial importance, as it is the meeting point for farmers, who sell their agricultural products there every week. These products are then distributed throughout the country and to the main businesses in the region.

It was a beautiful day and the view at the entrance to the village was incredible. The first thing we came across was this sculpture, which gives us a taste of the type of architecture we will find here; I have already described it before in my blog. Estanques is a colonial village, steeped in history and tradition. Here we can see some cacti, which are a predominant species in the Sucre Municipality of Mérida.

A few steps later, we left the main road and entered the small town, where we discovered this monument outside the Civil Registry Office: a bust of the liberator Simón Bolívar. It must be very recent, as I don't remember seeing it on my previous visits. It stands on a concrete pedestal with beautiful relief details.

Further on, we came to the village chapel; it looked beautiful as always. This time I didn't go in, hoping to visit on the way back and enjoy it more calmly, but that wasn't possible either, as I returned by private vehicle and we didn't stop in the village.

Next to the church is this elevated plaza, and this time we didn't miss the opportunity to spend some time there. I forgot the last time I was here; it had been many years since I had entered this plaza, and I was content just to see it from afar.

This is the ideal place to relax for a while; children have plenty of space to run and play, and there are even some exercise machines, which I think is great. Beautiful purple flowers adorn it, and the view of the town's traditional clay roofs is wonderful.

And here is the well-known gateway to those towns full of farmers and hard-working people; here begins the adventure on those steep roads that lead us to different places in southern Mérida. Here ends our little stroll by the ponds with those rays of bright sunshine. Now we just had to wait for the next transport that would take us to our destination.

I have always believed that no town is small as long as its inhabitants are filled with greatness, and if I have learned anything from the people of small towns over the years, it is that Estanques is definitely a big town. Of course, I invite you to come and see for yourself.

En una mañana cálida llegamos a Estanques, después de aproximadamente una hora y media de viaje por carretera. Llegar a este pequeño pueblito siempre me llena de ilusión, porque para mí solo significa una cosa y es que el abrazo de mis padres está cada vez más cerca.

Estanques es conocido como el portal de entrada a los pueblos del sur y es que marca el inicio de una ruta que nos lleva a distintos pueblos del Municipio Sucre y Arzobispo Chacón de Mérida. A pesar de que es un pueblo muy pequeño, tiene una gran importancia comercial, ya que es el punto de encuentro de agricultores, quienes semana a semana venden sus productos agrícolas y estos son distribuidos a todo el país y a los principales comercios de la región.

El día estaba precioso y la vista de la entrada del pueblo era increíble. Lo primero que encontramos es esta escultura que nos da un abreboca del tipo de arquitectura que encontraremos en este lugar; ya la he descrito antes en mi blog. Estanques es un pueblo colonial, lleno de historia y tradición. Aquí vemos algunos cactus, y es que son una especie predominante en el Municipio Sucre de Mérida.

Unos cuantos pasos después dejamos la carretera principal y entramos al pueblito y aquí descubrimos este monumento en las afueras del Registro Civil, este busto del libertador Simón Bolívar; debe tener muy poco tiempo, ya que en mis últimas visitas no recuerdo haberlo visto. Está construido sobre un pedestal de concreto con lindos detalles en relieve.

Más adelante llegamos a la capilla del pueblo; lucía hermosa como siempre. En esta oportunidad no entré, con la esperanza de entrar al momento de regresar y disfrutar de ella con más calma, pero tampoco fue posible, ya que regresé en vehículo particular y no nos detuvimos en el pueblo.

Al lado de la iglesía se encuentra esta plaza elevada y esta vez, no perdimos la oportunidad de pasar un rato en sus espacios, olvidé la última vez que estuve aquí, tenía muchos años sin entrar a esta plaza y solo me conformaba con verla desde lejos.

Este es el sitio ideal para recrearse un rato; los niños tienen mucho espacio para correr y jugar e incluso se encuentran algunas máquinas para ejercitarse, lo que me parece grandioso. Hermosas flores violetas la adornan y la vista hacia el tejado de arcilla criolla del poblado es maravillosa.

Y aquí está el conocido portal hacia esos pueblos llenos de agricultores y gente trabajadora; aquí comienza la aventura a esas carreteras de gran pendiente que nos conducen a distintos lugares del sur merideño. Aquí termino nuestro pequeño paseo por estanques con esos rayos del sol resplandeciente. Ahora solo nos tocaba esperar el próximo transporte que nos llevaría a nuestro destino.

Siempre he pensado que no existe pueblo pequeño mientras sus habitantes estén llenos de grandeza y si algo he aprendido de la gente de los pueblos durante los años, es que definitivamente Estanques es un pueblo grande. Por supuesto que te invito a conocerlo.
