Tanera and Dura palm fruit, I want to share a little about the differences.

Hello Hive friends and the ASEAN Hive community.

This time, I'd like to share a little knowledge about the differences between Tenera and Dura oil palms. The photo I took today shows a cross-section of the fruit, which can be used to identify the two types directly in my field.

Understanding Oil Palm Fruit Types
In oil palm cultivation.

there are several types of fruit based on their shell thickness. The two most well-known are Dura and Tenera.

  1. Dura Palm
The Dura palm is characterized by its thick shell. When the fruit is cut open, the shell appears larger and thicker, while the flesh is relatively thinner.

Dura Characteristics:

*Very thick shell.
*Thinner flesh.
*Lower oil content.
*Rarely used as a main crop in modern plantations.

  1. Tenera Palm Oil
The Tenera oil palm is a cross between the Dura and Pisifera varieties. This variety is most commonly grown on plantations due to its high productivity.

Tenera Characteristics:

*Thinner shell.
*Thicker flesh.
*Higher oil content.
*Better bunch production and oil yield.

The Differences Visible in the Photos

*From the results of observations on the split fruit.?
Fruit with a thick shell and thin flesh indicates Dura characteristics.
*Fruit with a thinner shell and thicker orange flesh indicates Tenera characteristics.

This difference is very important because the thickness of the fruit flesh directly affects the amount of oil that can be produced.

Thank you for visiting my post. I hope this simple article is helpful and provides insight into the types of oil palm fruit we often encounter on plantations.

Warm greetings from Indonesian palm oil plantations. 🌴😊

Thanks for explaining, friend! I actually didn't know exactly what a palm is. I thought it was just like a coconut tree. And I honestly thought coconut oil and palm oil came from the same tree 😅
