Definitely an eye-catcher! Jeepneys in the Philippines. (ENGLISH - DEUTSCH)

There are plenty of cars in the Philippines that have been rebuilt from a bolt from the legendary Willys Jeep. They all have the advantage that they are classified as classic cars and therefore have to meet significantly fewer safety and environmental requirements.

Autos, die aus einer Schraube des legendären Willys-Jeeps nachgebaut wurden, gibt es auf den Philippinen zuhauf. Sie alle haben den Vorteil, dass sie als Oldtimer eingestuft sind und daher deutlich weniger Sicherheits- und Umweltauflagen erfüllen müssen.

In the big cities, these old Willys-Jeeps are being phased out, one by one. They're just not up to snuff anymore. They're not lockable, they don't have air conditioning or automatic transmissions, and they guzzle gas, even though most of them run on Isuzu diesel. And then there are the outdated brakes and other things. But the worst part is that they're too slow because they're too heavy.

In den Großstädten werden sie nach und nach ausrangiert, weil sie einfach nicht mehr zeitgemäß sind. Sie sind nicht abschließbar, haben keine Klimaanlage oder Automatikgetriebe und verbrauchen Unmengen an Treibstoff, obwohl die meisten mit einem Isuzu Diesel fahren. Ganz zu schweigen von veralteten Bremsen und anderen Dingen. Und vor allem sind sie zu langsam, weil sie zu schwer sind.

Everyone knows the famous jeepneys that are used for public transportation. The same platform, size, and body are also used as small trucks, all the way up to livestock carriers. Above is a truck, and below is a bus line in my region with the typical red belly band. Those who can afford it have them built out of stainless steel to prevent decay, but in any case, galvanized sheet metal is used. The Philippines are an island nation, and the salty haze of the tropics is everywhere.

Fast jeder kennt die berühmten Jeepneys, die im öffentlichen Nahverkehr eingesetzt werden. Die gleiche Plattform, Größe und Karosserie wird auch gerne als Kleintransporter bis hin zum Viehtransporter eingesetzt. Oben ein Transporter, unten mit der typischen roten Bauchbinde eine Buslinie in meiner Region. Wer es sich leisten kann, lässt aus Edelstahl bauen, um dem Verfall entgegenzuwirken, auf jeden Fall wird verzinktes Blech verwendet. Die Philippinen sind ein Inselstaat und der salzige Dunst der Tropen ist überall.

As charming as they may look in their individual decorations, I've seen everything from Emily as a radiator figure to a Mercedes hubcap. However, in today's fast-paced and congested traffic, they are more of a burden. The acceleration is from the 70s, the transmission from the Korean War, or so it sounds. And spending an hour in one of them at 35 degrees Celsius in the shade is no pleasure.

So charmant sie auch in ihrer individuellen Ausstattung aussehen, ich habe von der Emily als Kühlerfigur bis zur Mercedes-Radkappe alles gesehen, im heutigen schnellen und dichten Verkehr sind sie eher eine Belastung. Die Beschleunigung ist aus den 70ern, das Getriebe aus dem Koreakrieg, so klingt es jedenfalls. Und bei 35 Grad im Schatten eine Stunde damit unterwegs zu sein, ist kein Vergnügen.

Getting in and out of a jeepney can be a challenge, as they're pretty low to the ground. And once you're in, you'll be sitting on a hard bench that's not exactly comfortable. If you're getting on at the end of the line, be prepared to wait until the bus is full. The driver has to make a living, after all.

There are also standing spots available for half price. These are the shelves above the taillights and the step at the entrance, which can accommodate up to 4 people.

During the ride, it's important to hold on to something, so you don't end up on your neighbor's lap or on the street when the jeepney takes a sharp turn or brakes suddenly. You can also watch the luggage cart rolling down the aisle or just sweat in peace.

To pay, the fare is passed from passenger to passenger until it reaches the driver. The driver can also make change during the ride. To get off, you knock on the roof and yell.

Man muss wegen der geringen Höhe im Kriechgang ein- und aussteigen, sitzt sehr unbequem auf einer harten Bank und wenn man an einer Endhaltestelle einsteigt, muss man warten, bis der Bus voll ist. Der Fahrer muss schließlich Geld verdienen.
Es gibt auch Stehplätze zum halben Preis. Das sind diese Ablagen über den Rücklichtern und die Stufe am Einstieg, gut für 4 Personen.
Während der Fahrt hält man sich irgendwo fest, damit man bei Kurvenfahrten oder Bremsmanövern nicht auf dem Schoß des Sitznachbarn oder auf der Straße landet. Man kann den Gepäckwagen im Gang zuschauen oder einfach nur in Ruhe schwitzen.
Zum Bezahlen wird das Geld von Fahrgast zu Fahrgast an den Fahrer weitergereicht, der es auch während der Fahrt wechseln kann. Will man aussteigen, klopft man auf das Dach und ruft.

Tourists might find it a bit of an adventure, but for most commuters who are just trying to get to work, school, or the doctor's office, it's not so much fun.

Für Touristen ist das sicher ein kleines Abenteuer. Aber für die meisten Fahrgäste, die nicht zum Spaß, sondern zur Arbeit in Büros, Krankenhäuser, Schulen und Geschäfte fahren, ist es nicht so angenehm.

I'm not a fan of those rides, so I try to avoid them by taking the bus whenever I need to go to town. Luckily, I only have to do that for boring stuff like government errands or medical appointments. This area is pretty small, from mountains to sea, so you don't really need a car if you have time, are a good walker, and like to go for walks. But those so-called owner-type jeeps might just tempt me to buy one again. They're basically the same base, just not inflated into a minibus or van. They're private vehicles, also built from the remains of Willis jeeps that the Americans forgot to scrap after the Korean War.

Ich persönlich freue mich nicht auf solche Fahrten und versuche, sie zu vermeiden, indem ich den Überlandbus nehme, wenn ich in die Stadt muss. Und zum Glück muss ich das nur wegen irgendwelcher Behördengänge oder aus medizinischen Gründen. Diese Gegend ist so kleinräumig, von den Bergen bis zum Meer, dass man eigentlich kein Auto braucht, wenn man Zeit hat, gut zu Fuß ist und gerne spazieren geht. Aber diese sogenannten Owner-Type-Jeeps könnten mich dazu verleiten, mir wieder eines zu kaufen. Das ist im Prinzip die gleiche Basis, nur nicht zum Minibus oder Transporter aufgeblasen, sondern es sind Privatfahrzeuge, auch gebaut aus den Resten der Willis-Jeeps, die die Amerikaner nach dem Koreakrieg vergessen haben zu verschrotten.

Es gibt sie in allen Zuständen, vom Edelstahlschrott am Straßenrand bis zum echten Hingucker.
Die Preise beginnen bei 20.000 Pesos (400$) für Edelstahlschrott, aber nur, wenn Papiere vorhanden sind. Der teuerste, den ich hier gesehen habe, kostete 250.000 Peso.

Here you'll find a slightly stretched version, if you will, a pickup with a cab, lots of minimalist convertibles, and the occasional closed-top model. Maybe even a few with air conditioning?

Hier fährt eine etwas gestrecktere Form, wenn man so will, ein Pickup mit Fahrerkabine, ganz viele minimalistische Cabrios und das eine oder andere ganz geschlossene. Vielleicht haben die sogar eine Klimaanlage drin?

They all have one thing in common: no interior trim, no insulation, not even carpets or floor mats. In fact, they can even survive a flood, except for the boomboxes, maybe.

And closing the doors isn't exactly a high priority.

Eines haben sie alle gemeinsam. Es gibt keine Innenverkleidung, keine Isolierung, nicht einmal Teppiche oder Fußmatten. Im Prinzip überstehen sie sogar eine Überschwemmung, vielleicht mit Ausnahme der Boomboxen.
Abschließen ist auch nicht unbedingt das bevorzugte Ausstattungsmerkmal.

At first glance, that doesn't sound so bad. After all, it's never cold here, right?

But if the asphalt is 50 degrees Celsius, then the floor pan is also 50 degrees Celsius, and so is everything else. Just imagine how cozy that is in your flip-flops.

And what doesn't have a coating also doesn't have any vibration damping. Sometimes the side panels rumble louder than the often rusty exhaust pipes. These are definitely not long-distance vehicles.

Das hört sich erst mal gar nicht so schlimm an, schließlich ist es hier nie kalt, oder?
Aber wenn der Asphalt 50 Grad hat, dann hat auch das Bodenblech 50 Grad und alles andere auch. Stellt euch mal vor, wie kuschelig das in euren Flip-Flops ist.
Und was keine Beschichtung hat, hat auch keine Schwingungsdämpfung. Manchmal dröhnen die Seitenbleche lauter als die oft verrosteten Auspuffe. Keinesfalls sind das Langstreckenfahrzeuge.

Luckily, I have no ambitions for long-distance travel. And as a beach buggy, they're really perfect. You never have to wash or vacuum it, the wind and rain do that for you. It can't rust, and you don't have to worry about scratches.

In return, you get a truly unique car, a one-of-a-kind, if you will.

Zum Glück habe ich keine Ambitionen auf Langstrecken. Und als Strandbuggy sind sie wirklich perfekt. Man muss ihn nie putzen oder absaugen, das machen Wind und Regen, er kann nicht rosten und man braucht keine Angst vor Kratzern zu haben.
Dafür hat man ein wirklich einzigartiges Auto, ein Unikat, wenn man so will.

Here's an example of how unique all these vehicles are. Even the cockpits and seats are whatever the owner has on hand or really wants. So each of these owners is also unique on the inside.

For example, I'm not sure if this cockpit is made of plastic or carved from a tree trunk. It looks like wood and feels like it too. But that would be way too heavy, right?

Wie einzigartig all diese Fahrzeuge sind, zeigt das folgende Beispiel. Auch die Cockpits und Sitze sind eben das, was man gerade hat oder unbedingt haben will. So ist jeder dieser Besitzertypen auch innen einzigartig.
Bei diesem Cockpit zum Beispiel bin ich mir nicht sicher, ob es aus Plastik ist oder aus einem Baumstamm geschnitzt wurde. Es sieht aus wie Holz und fühlt sich auch so an. Aber das wäre doch viel zu schwer, oder?
