Wandering Through Model Shops

Syntrend Creative Park in Taipei is a place I know about but rarely visit. To be honest, it’s like a paradise for tech lovers and shoppers alike. With its variety of specialty and concept stores, it caters to just about every digital need — whether you’re looking for the latest smartphones, laptops, or other tech gadgets. But beyond being just a shopping mall, it’s really more of a fusion of technology, entertainment, and culture. On this visit, what really caught my attention was the massive collection of model figures on display.
There’s even a rare Gundam flagship store here, which left a deep impression on me. The display wall showcased Gundam logos, visuals, and iconic mobile suits from the very first Mobile Suit Gundam all the way to the latest The Witch from Mercury. Both hero and enemy suits were represented, each meticulously built and beautifully displayed. I wouldn’t call myself a hardcore Gundam fan, but I still found myself standing there for quite a while, admiring those cool-looking mecha warriors up close.
Then there’s Beast Kingdom, a collectible toy brand that focuses on turning iconic characters from Disney, Marvel, DC, and Star Wars into high-quality statues and designer figures. You can’t miss it — a life-sized Iron Man statue stands right at the entrance, greeting everyone who walks by. Inside, the shelves are filled with stunningly detailed figures that could leave any collector speechless. Of course, those masterpieces don’t come cheap, so I settled for taking a few cool photos instead. In one corner of the store, there was a preorder section for upcoming releases — some of them so exclusive that you’d have to wait nearly two years after ordering to receive them. That’s real collector-level dedication!
Aside from those high-end collectibles, there were also plenty of trendy figures that only cost a few hundred dollars, like the popular blind box toys. I don’t have many friends who collect figures, but I’ve seen enough TV shows and online features about toy collecting to know that it’s a huge trend. Seeing full blind box series displayed so neatly almost made me want to start collecting, too. But then I thought about my small apartment. I really don’t have the space for them so that little spark of desire quickly faded.
One of the most interesting stores I found was a secondhand shop that sold all kinds of pre-owned anime merchandise, such as figures, plushies, badges, acrylic stands, and more. Some items were surprisingly expensive, probably due to their rarity or collector value, while others were much cheaper, usually featuring less popular characters. It really felt like a treasure hunt; even if you don’t buy anything, just browsing through everything is fun and oddly relaxing.
