The tokusatsu exhibition in the underground mall
Have you ever heard of tokusatsu films? They're also known as special effects films, basically using science and special effects to shoot movies or TV shows. They usually revolve around sci-fi, fantasy, or horror themes. Tokusatsu is a hugely popular form of entertainment in Japan. You've got your famous monster flicks like Godzilla and superhero TV series like Kamen Rider. It's kind of niche, but it seems like more and more people are getting into it.
Anyway, this past weekend, with the weather being crappy and all those aftershocks from the earthquake, I figured it wasn't a great time for outdoor activities. I heard about this tokusatsu exhibition happening indoors, which was perfect since it wouldn't be affected by the rain and it was free to attend. It was located in this underground mall that's known for showcasing creative industries, so it made sense to hold the exhibition there.
The marketplace area was packed with tokusatsu enthusiasts and toy collectors, showing off their original creations, fan art, or collectibles. When I was a kid, I only caught glimpses of shows like Kamen Rider or Ultraman since they weren't regularly aired on mainstream channels. So, I barely recognized most of the models being displayed, and the prices ranged from cheap to ridiculously expensive. People were walking around dressed up as their favorite characters, just like any other convention. That's what made it different from other events.
I had a chat with some folks from an original tokusatsu booth. They're a group of enthusiasts who have regular jobs but spend their spare time crafting their own characters, creating products, and promoting and selling them. You can tell they're really passionate about tokusatsu.
The organizers also invited guests from Japan, Honda Kento, Haga Yuria, and Suzumura Nobuhiro, who I believe are actors from Japanese tokusatsu films. They held signing sessions, photo ops, and meet-and-greets at the venue. You had to buy signing or photo vouchers to interact with them, but I'm not sure how much they cost. At one booth, I saw signature boards from a previous event being sold for 500 NT dollars. From the outskirts, I spotted a line forming at the main stage, where probably dozens of fans would get to interact with the guests. There were tokusatsu characters walking around, adding a sci-fi vibe to the place. Most of them were male characters, but there were a few female cosplayers too, adding a touch of warmth to the otherwise macho atmosphere.
