For budget-conscious students and working-class folks, second-run cinemas like Lin Yuan Cinema offer a pocket-friendly entertainment option. Situated in old commercial districts to accommodate lower rents, these cinemas lack the thunderous Dolby surround sound and extravagant movie-themed decor. Some might be put off by the dated environment and equipment. However, with ticket prices around a hundred NT dollars, patrons can enjoy multiple recent releases, making it an attractive option for those on a tight budget. During the pandemic, traditional entertainment venues like second-run cinemas took a hard hit as most activities shifted online. Many cinemas had to close their doors, leaving only a few still operating.

Lin Yuan Cinema is one such surviving establishment, nestled inconspicuously in an old commercial area. I stumbled upon it during my lunch break while searching for nearby hangout spots on the map. Back in my student days, I frequented second-run cinemas like Lin Yuan. After school, my friends and I would grab a quick dinner, skip going home, and head straight to the cinema. For just a hundred NT dollars or so, we could catch two recently released movies, making it a cheap and fun way to spend our time.

Unfortunately, most of the second-run cinemas I used to visit have shut down. It's rare to find them nowadays. So when I heard about Lin Yuan Cinema, I decided to check it out. Tucked away in a small alley within the commercial district, it doesn't draw much attention. There's no fancy decor, just a few outdated arcade machines. The ticket counter isn't even manned; patrons are directed to purchase tickets directly on the third floor.

It seems their current highlight is "Aquaman: Lost Kingdom," a movie I'd definitely want to watch in a theater. Unfortunately, I have other commitments this afternoon, so I'll have to miss out this time. From what I gathered, tickets are priced at a reasonable 180 NT dollars and grant access to all screenings. That's quite a steal considering the variety of movies available. I'm particularly interested in "Willy Wonka," "Love Love Love You," and "The King's Man." All Western flicks, each with an average runtime of around two hours. If you don't catch the early screenings, there's no way you'll make it through all four movies in one go.
