You know, back in the day, when people traveled to Japan, they'd often rent those Japanese kimonos, dress up, and wander around the little streets, really soaking in the Japanese vibe. Whether it was snapping pics at landmarks or just taking selfies, it was all about making those special memories. And then, just the other day, when I was in Xiamen, I saw these dress-up selfie studios on Zhongshan Road. They had all sorts of outfits, letting you dive into these cool themed sets – like old-school Chinese courtyards or retro street scenes – and just have a blast taking photos, you know, dressing up as someone else for a change.

Seems like these selfie studios have been popping up everywhere lately. I heard some hardcore anime fans even dress up as their favorite characters for these anime events. And just recently, a friend of mine found this place in the Dihua Street visitor center that offers free dress-up experiences. You gotta book ahead, but once you're in, you can pick out an outfit and accessories that fit you, and then take photos in their retro-style setups. Since it's free, it's super popular. My friend managed to snag a reservation, so I tagged along to see what it was all about.

Honestly, a lot of my girlfriends have never worn a cheongsam before. And those cheongsam photo sessions at regular studios can cost a fortune, like thousands of NT dollars. So when they heard about this free place, they were all over it. They've got a few cool backdrops, like a traditional Chinese medicine shop, a tea house, a lantern shop, and an old schoolhouse. I gotta say, the sets are super well-made, and they're pretty big too. It's almost like one of those trendy influencer spots, maybe even better than some of them.

Watching my friends strike all sorts of poses in those settings, and having a photographer capture their best angles, it was a blast. Even if you don't rent an outfit, you can still go in and take photos. But honestly, dressing up in those retro clothes just makes the whole experience so much better. The lantern shop, with all its colorful lanterns and warm lighting, had this mix of Japanese and festive Chinese New Year vibes, and it was definitely the most popular spot. Of course, wearing a cheongsam or a Zhongshan suit and posing in those Chinese retro settings just felt so right. We spent three hours there, just laughing and having a great time. A lot of my friends thought the time flew by too fast. What do you guys think?
