The beautiful Szent István Bazilika in Budapest, Hungary

This is the basilica in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Budapest has lots of wonderful architecture. One of the most beautiful examples is the St. Stefans Basilika or Szent István Bazilika. This enormous Roman Catholic church is located in the heart of the city. The church is 96 meters high. Something that makes it one of the tallest buildings in the city. You can see it from a long distance and it can be good to navigate by since it is so visible. It is named after Hungary's first king, István. He ruled the country from 1000 – 1038 and was the one who introduced Christianity in Hungary and strengthened the Hungarian state.

From the dome you get a fantastic view of the city. There were a lot of people in the city. We happend to be there at as the world championships in athletics were held. The queue was therefore long at the ticket window where we could buy a ticket for both a tour of the church and the dome. This time we only chose the dome, since we have been inside the church itself last time we were here in Budapest.

The interior is just as stunning as the exterior. You will find a very special relic is found in the church. King István's mummified right hand. I did not see it and I am not sure that any visitor has seen it. Today King István is one of Hungary's saints and his birthday has been made a public holiday.

The church was designed at the end of the 19th century by Miklós Ybl. It was completed in 1905, after being in a construction process for about 50 years. But the result is amazing.
