STREET ART #267 – A fairytale butterfly in Aalborg, Denmark

avatar

This beautiful butterfly was completed just a few weeks ago. You can find it in Nørresundby, which is the city north of Aalborg. The two cities are separated by the Limfjord. The bridge that connects Nørresundby and Aalborg, is located almost directly in front of the painting. The artist behind the mural, is Super A, who is Dutch. It was created through a collaborative project with KIRK Galleri in Aalborg. This gallery has been behind the initiative to invite artists to the city as part of the street art project "Out in the Open" for many years.

When you look at work by Super A, you will see that he often is repetitive. His works is often about the tension between two worlds. Contrasts is the key word. When he is telling a story, he often uses visual effects, so that he can bring out the contrasts.

What we see here is a colorful butterfly. Often thought of as symbolizing freedom (since it can fly). However, when we study the details of the painting, we see more symbols. The artist has been inspired by H.C.Andersen fairy tales. Andersen was a famous Danish fairy tale writer (1805 - 1875). I am here with one of my sisters. We grew up with these fairy tales, so we can easily recognize H.C.Andersen's characters.

We can see «The Little Girl with the Brimstones» ( to the right). She symbolizes the lack of social presence and is a contrast to today's social media (the left). We also see both the duckling and the swan from «The Ugly Duckling». Opposite the dandelion there is a branch of an apletree. The Nightingale (also from one of the fairy tales) The mechanical nightingale is placed opposite the real one.

We also see two cartoon characters from Thumbelina (also a fairy tale) standing on a bridge. It is perhaps no coincidence that the painting is on a wall directly opposite the bridge across Limfjorden. The bridge is a symbol of balance between two worlds. In this way, the bridge becomes a metaphor for finding balance. Definitly a piece of work that clearly emphasizes this balance.

It was really great to see this beautiful wold that recalls the fairy tales from H.C.Andersen.
