STREET ART #251 – A museum with an outdoor gallery, Mauritius

The place where I have found all of these beautiful paintings is L'Aventure du Sucre, which is located in northern Mauritius. It is a former sugar factury that has been transformed into a museum, telling the story of sugar. When Franch and later Britain were the colonoal powers in Mauritius, they started the growing of sugar canes which turned out to make a huge impact on the economics of the island. During a period of 250 years, more than 300 sugar factories were build all over the island. The museum is a great place to learn about the history of both sugar and the island. I have been visiting the museum several times, but this is the first time I see all the art on the walls of the factory itself and some of the surrounding buildings.

After entering the gate, the first you see is this sculpture with a variety of tropical plants and birds. In the background you can see part of the old factory. The whole place looks like an outdoor gallery now. It certainly have changed since last time I was here.

The path leading to the entrance to the museum has these intriguing, circular lines. The artist is Jordane Saget, a French contemporary artist. His lines are most reminiscent of some form of abstract, but he probably has a thought behind them. I don't know so much about him, other than he is a self-taught artist whose career started in Paris. The lines leads directly to the main entrance.

The entrance to the museum is decorated with 3 paintings by different artists. This one is placed on an end wall leading up to the toilet. The artist is Baba Gaia. She is an artist who makes beautiful paintings of the tropical landscapes.

These two paintings are placed on each side of the entrance. They are very different in style. But both artists makes use of the box in front (I don't know what it is for...). A nice detail is the bird on the box. The same motives from the wall continues onto the box, which I think gives a good overall impression. I really think the blue to the right is gorgeous. The butterflies on the walls continues to the top of the box. Also the sugar canes continues from the wall and to the side of the box. The plants on both are sugar canes, but the ones on the red painting are sugar canes in bloom.

Around the corner, leading to the sovenir shop, I found these two paintings. Even the old train carriage has paintings of travelers in the closed windows. The old locomotive with two carriages stands in the yard in front. Much to the delight of children. I must admid I was surprised to see all of these paintings, that has changed the buildings and outside area of the factury.

This must be a very interesting museum about the history of this island and its sugar industry. And with lots of superb murals too. Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.
