STREET ART #246 – «Protect the Oceans», Port Louis, Mauritius

avatar

This painting is found at the Le Gaudan Waterfront, which is a large shoppingcenter complex by the harbor front in the capital Port Louis. This painting is new. It wasn't here last year when I was here. The artist is Daphne Doomun. It was painted and unveiled as a part of a launch initiated by Greenpeace Africa. The whole message is about proteting life in the oceans ( Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean). On Instagram she is explaining the painting. The oceans are filled with life, but they are also fading. It is painted on the pavement where people walk along the waterfront. Besides fish, there is the text : « protect the Oceans» and «30x30 now».

The painting shows many fish. From skelleton fishes at one end to colorful fishes at the other end. I have found out from a video on the artist's Instagram account that she has divided the painting into three parts. You have to start where you see the two skelleton fishes.

The first part

The first part shows how life in the oceans are becoming extinct. They are threatened. That's why they are not in colors, but in black and white.

The middle part

When moving to the middle section you are now at the turning point. If we - the humans - will be taking the necessary steps, we can turn it around.

The third part

At the other end I can see lots of colorful fish in fresh and healthy environment. The message is: if we do everything necessary, life in the ocean will survive.

The «30x30» is to be understood as: if we take the nessasary steps then by 2030 approx. 30% of all marine life should be saved. This is also the global goal. If we can manage that, the 30% of marine life will survive. It's only a few years until we reach 2030. Let's hope we can do it.

I checked the Instagram to Daphne Doomun and found a video that explanins the painting.
