STREET ART #225 – Whales in a small fishing town in Denmark

This summer, when I was in Denmark, I found these beautiful paintings in Hals. This small fishing town is located east of Aalborg, where the Limfjord flows into the sea. What my sister and I had planned was a long walk along the coast from Hals and northwards. But before that, we took a walk in the streets. Our parents once lived here a long time ago. While we were walking around, we recognized streets and landmarks. While doing so, we also came across these beautiful works of art.

Completely surprised that this small town had gorgeous art like this. As you see, the play with light and shadows didn't give me the best positions for getting good photos. The girl is sitting there very thoughtful looking at her paper boats floating. I don't know who the artist is.

The next two paintings of whales tell a little about what the town is known for. In the center stands the whale jaw of a whale that was shot in 1868. Hals is a typical fishing town and without me knowing anything about it, there may have been inhabitants who might have been whalers.

We noticed this wall after passing the whale jaws. The main motif is a whale with young. There are several animals present. The deer is well-known in Denmark, but penguins are not found here, except in a zoo. The lighthouse is also well-known. By looking closely at the entire wall, we found very small details such as the two people who seems to be hikers.

An elderly man stopped and talked to us. He told us that the artist lives in this house and that his wife have done another painting with a whale. After he left, we had a look in the window and saw the room filled with paintings. In one window there is a board with information about the artist. His name is Fredrik Hesseldahl, born in 1997. He is an architect, who started his career as a graffiti artist. His art has been exhibited in several places in Denmark.

This is the other painting. It is is huge, which made it impossible to get the whole painting in one photo. Again the whale is the main motif. The whale seems to be flying over the beach. On top are penguins. We also see white bird, which is a typical Danish bird.

Then there is the flying sea turtle carrying a tiger rabbit. The man we met told us that this is the newest painting in town. I must admid I was surprised to find that this little town has great street art. But, it is a popular tourist destination during the summers.

Beautiful works in this little city, high quality. The first wall with the little girl seems to be the work of Charlotte Rydborg. And I like the tiger rabbit, a kind of rabbit that makes you think twice before petting it 😀 Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.

Have a lovely Friday

I was surprised to see all of these murals. Especially since Hals is so small. And you are right. The artist behind the the little girl, is Charlotte Rydborg🙂

The intricate details of each painting are worth the time to observe the art, a lot seems to be happening on each of them. Very creative and detailed and it marries naturally with the atmosphere of the place :)
