STREET ART #226 – Eternitten i Aalborg

Earlier this year I took a cycling trip in Aalborg, together with a sister. We came, among other things, past this building. I didn't know much about it, but she could tell that this was the old guard bow of Eternitten. It is an old factory that is now closed. But for a period from 1927 the factory produced eternit. This production led, among other things, to Aalborg growing as an industrial city.

It ensured that many of the inhabitants got jobs here. Today the old guardhouse is what is left in its original form. Many of the old factory buildings look more or less like they did then, but they contained new apartments. We did take a look through the windows as well as looking at the «workers» on the walls. I noticed the signature Søren Elgaard, without knowing anything about him.

Eternit is used, among other things, for cladding panels for roofs and walls, ventilation ducts, etc. It consists of asbestos cement products. I am unsure whether the health hazards (cancer) associated with asbestos may be one of the reasons for the factory being closed. As far as I know, the material is no longer used. It was a pleasant surprise to be on here on the old premises of the factory.

Superb work highlighting the industrial past of this place. In Quebec, there is also an old asbestos mine, and even the town bore that name. That has changed since then, Val Des Sources, now. Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.

Have a lovely day

Always great to find surprises like these. It's part of the history of a city that is interesting to discover, I think.
