STREET ART #215 – East Side Gallery in Berlin

When I was in Berlin in May this year, the famous East Side Gallery was one of the places we had to see. This is an open-air gallery along the river Spree where more than 100 artists have decorated the 1.300 meters wall. This part is the longest preserved part of the wall that divided East and West Berlin. The artists who painted the world came from 21 countries. Some of these paintings are still here.

We took the hop-on-hop-off bus, and just got off at the Oberbaumbrücke. The bridge was partly destroyd during WWII, but was renovated. Besides the gallery, the area was interestig. The bus tour took us to the Soviet sector.

The The Fratenal Kiss by Dmitri Vrubel, a Russian painter. This work:»My God, Help Me to Survice This Deadly Love» is probably the most famous of all the paintings on this wall. It is also the painting he was known for. The mural is depicting Leonid Brezhnew and Erich Honecker kissing. Erich Honecker was in 1989 an East German leader who got into power by the help of the leader of Soviet, Leonid Brezhnev. I think it was Mikhail Gorbachev who took his place as the leader.

Here is a comment on censorship in art. The title was a way of paying tribute to J.S.Bach and his last work called ‘The Art of the Fugue’.

The artist is Ana Leonur, but I haven't been able to find out about here, except I understand she is from Portugal.

The artist is Birgit Kinders. In 1990 she paintet the Trabant break through the Wall, This car was an East German made car. Notice the licence plate – 9 November 1989 – that was the day the of the opening between East and West Geramany. In 1990 the wall was demolished. She is an artist from former East Germany

This mural was found on a house on the oposite side of the river and next to the Oberbaumbrücke. Since I was already doing a walk across the bridge, I noticed this building.
It was quite a walk along a gallery with so many paintings. Some of them made an impression. This is only a small part of the 90 miles long wall that around Berlin. It was the Soviet who started the building in august 1961.

Incredible piece of StreetArt on this historic stretch of wall. It's nice to see that works of art stand the test of time. Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.
Have a lovely day
Many are still in good shape, though some have been re- painted. Great to see some of these famous works🙂
Very cool pieces, I was there a few years ago and I only remember some of those. 😎
I had seen the most famous ones on photos, but it made a difference to actually be there🙂
That entire street seems fascinating with those beautiful wall arts.
