STREET ART #209 – Beautifully decorated pillars in Mauritius

avatar

One day a few weeks ago I was standing at a bus stop in Port Louis and saw two of the pillars that support the metro line. I decided to just take the next bus and instead go over and look at these. To my surprise, it wasn't just those two that were decorated. There were more here. All of them are beautifully painted. The colors are vibrant and with motifs from the island. A pleasant surprise I wouldn't have known about, if it wasn't for the bus I was waiting for.

The pillar above shows tropical plants, native to the island. The white bird you see on top,is the national bird which is also on the logo to the national airline , Air Mauritius. The iconic mountain, Pieter Both is located not far from the capital. It's visible from far away.

The pillars are supporting part of the metro only a few hundred meters from the starting point in the center of Port Louis. The paintings are signed @nim_volatile, painted is 2023. The metro line is above the streets for only a few hundred meters so there aren't that many pillars. Not all are decorated either, but maybe there will be more.....I have tried to look up the artist. From her Instagram account I learned she is from Mauritius, but currently living in Germany.

Plants and flowers are found in great abundance and diversity on the island. There is no shortage of flowers, trees, shrubs, not to mention all the fruit trees.

Beautifully painted native animal- the lizard. They come in different sizes and colors. You will see a lot of them. The very small ones can easily get inside a house. I see them often in our house. They run so fast on the walls and ceiling. There is a rather large, green lizard I usually see in the garden and the outer walls of the house. It's running too fast for me to get close enough for a photo.

Birds on the island. You can see a parrot here, but the big, rather round bird is a Dodo. This bird was endemich to Mauritius, but is now extict. This happen long time ago. It is rather big / maybe 60-70 meters in hight. This is based on skeletons found on the island. It could not fly. Thats the reason it became extinct. The Dutch were the first to arrive on the island. They probably both consumed the both the bird and the eggs.

Hi @digi-me what a wonderful find, radiant, lush and very colorful. Quite a delicacy to the senses, nature with its flora and fauna gives gallantry to the space. It gives life to inert concrete, to transform it and give validity and meaning. Thank you for sharing. Health and well-being !LUV

It is so Mauritius the way the artist has chosen to present the island natural elements. Definitive much better than the grey, dull pillars!

In Montreal, it was a 3-day weekend, so a little delay in reading the StreetArt posts 😀 Superb series of pillars with these colors and shapes, much better than "sad gray concrete". Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.

Have a great week
