STREET ART #208 – Beautiful birds at the metro station

Just before the metro statian at Coromandel, south of Port Louis you will find these large, beautiful painting of birds. All of them are known to the island. The first time I noticed this wall, was from the window in the train. Second time I was using the metro to get to the centre of the island, I chose to get of here to get the chance to get a closer look.

The paintings are on the wall right beside the track some 20-30 meters from the station. There are stairs from the station leading to the road. I went up there, only to find a tall fence that made it difficult to take photos. I went down to the station again and walked passed the entrance saying "only for authorized personal". I did this because I saw the road along the track and thought that there is space enough for me, even when a train should come.

The paintings show eight well-known birds that live on the island. The colors are nicely coordinated in shades from yellow to green. Some of the birds I have heard the name of and also seen. Such as the pigeon and the Mauritius kestrel. The others I don't know, but I looked them up to find out a little more. The Maurtius Kestrel is a bird endemic to the Mauritian forest. It belongs to the same family as the falcon.

Red-whiskered bulbul is mostly known as an Asian bird, but it is found here in Mauritius as well. If you are lucky, you might see it in gardens. Echo parakeet is a parrot endemic to Mautirius. Now it is the only parrot still living on the island. The other species are now extinct.

The Mauritian Olive White Eye is not a common sight. It is so rare because of being critically endangered. It belongs to the same family is the Grey White Eye.

As you can see, the paintings are large. A nice way to decorate that gray concrete wall. I'm mostly used to finding street art in the capital Port Louis. But finding more like this outside the capital has been exciting. I don't know anything about who the artist is or when these were painted. But they must be fairly new. I think the metro opened in 2022.

Great works with all these birds from the island. You took risks to take these photos, well done! Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.
