PhotoFeed Contest - Cityscape Photography #34 : Magical Venice

I have visited this Italian city several times and think there may be more visits. It is a beautiful city, known for its islands, the canals and the architecture. It has so much to offer that it is easy to spend many days here. In the center you will find some of the most famous landmarks in the city: St. Mark's Square with the Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs. The Rialto bridge is famous and to me, one of the most beautiful. Venice was founded on a number of 118 islands. These are separated by channels and therefore there are approx. 400 bridges which in turn connect the islands to each other. How was Venice created? Piles were driven down and three platforms and stones were placed on top, which then constitute what the city is built on. Venice is prone to flooding and what has been prominent in the media is that the city is sinking. I also think I read somewhere that the flow of tourists to the city has been limited, but I don't know if that has anything to do with the fact that it has started to sink.

It is believed that the city arose over time and grew strong and for a longer period it was a separate city-state that dominated the Mediterranean. What made Venice a city characterized by prosperity, was trade and shipping. It was only when Napoleon entered the city and occupied northern Italy, that the city in 1797 lost its independence.
