The Birmingham Library, also known as the Library of Birmingham, is a public library located in the city of Birmingham in the West Midlands region of the United Kingdom. It is the largest public library in the country and is a major cultural hub for the city.

The original Birmingham Library was founded in 1779 and was located in the Birmingham Guildhall. It was a subscription library, with members paying an annual fee to use its resources. In 1860, the library moved to a new building on Ratcliff Place, but this was destroyed during World War II.

In 1974, the Birmingham Central Library was opened, which became the main library for the city. However, by the 1990s, the building was deemed unfit for purpose and plans were made for a new library.

The New Library:
The new Library of Birmingham was opened in 2013 and was designed by Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo. It is located in Centenary Square, next to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the Birmingham Symphony Hall.

The building is a modern architectural masterpiece, with its distinctive circular shape and striking gold and silver façade. It has 10 floors and houses over 800,000 books, as well as a vast collection of digital resources, archives, and special collections.

Facilities:
The Birmingham Library offers a wide range of facilities and services to its visitors. These include:

  1. Reading Rooms: The library has several reading rooms, including a Shakespeare Memorial Room, which houses the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare-related material.

  2. Digital Library: The library has a dedicated digital library with access to e-books, online journals, and databases.

  3. Exhibition Spaces: The library has several exhibition spaces that showcase the city’s history, culture, and art.

  4. Children’s Library: There is a dedicated area for children, with books, games, and activities for kids of all ages.

  5. Music Library: The library has a music library with a vast collection of sheet music, recordings, and books on music.

  6. Meeting Rooms: The library has several meeting rooms that can be booked for events, conferences, and meetings.

  7. Café: The library has a café on the ground floor, which serves a variety of food and drinks.

Events and Activities:
The Birmingham Library hosts a wide range of events and activities for people of all ages. These include author talks, workshops, book clubs, and exhibitions. The library also has a program of events for children, including storytelling sessions and craft workshops.

The Birmingham Library is open seven days a week, except for certain public holidays. It is free to enter and all members of the public are welcome to use its resources and facilities.

The library is easily accessible by public transport, with several bus and train stops nearby. There is also a car park adjacent to the library for those driving.

The Birmingham Library is a modern, state-of-the-art facility that offers a wealth of resources, services, and events for its visitors. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in literature, culture, and history in the West Midlands region of the United Kingdom.

Here's a link to that copycat community. It looks like nobody has posted for a while there but sometimes folks accidentally mistake that one for our community. It doesn't matter about the tags but make sure that you set your post to be published in the right Photography Lovers Community before posting when that's where you want it to show up. I thought you may have accidentally posted there but I think I was wrong. Cheers browski
