The most famous gate in Montevideo 🏛[Spanish/English]

In 1877, due to the growth of the walls, the demolition of the old city walls and the Citadel along with them was completed. The gate was dismantled stone by stone and moved to different locations until it was installed as the "rear gate" of the School of Arts and Crafts building. In 1959, it was restored and moved to the mouth of Sarandí Street, a few meters from its original location. For this purpose, a structure had to be erected to serve as a buttress on which it rested and provided solid support for the portal. Due to its increasing deterioration, it was restored in 2009.

It is currently one of Montevideo's most recognizable monuments, having become a symbol of the city and an important tourist attraction.

At this time, it is located on a divider on the side of Plaza Independencia and marks the entrance to the Old City.

En 1877 debido al crecimiento de muros se terminan de demoler las murallas de la ciudad vieja y junto a ellas la Ciudadela. La puerta es desmantelada piedra a piedra y recorre diferentes lugares hasta ser instalada como "portón trasero" del edificio de la Escuela de Artes y Oficios. En 1959 fue restaurada y trasladada a la desembocadura de la calle Sarandí, unos metros desplazada de su lugar original. Hubo de levantarse para tal efecto una estructura que cumpliera las veces de contrafuerte sobre el cual se apoyara y diera soporte sólido al portal. Debido al creciente deterioro fue restaurada en 2009.

Actualmente es uno de los monumentos más reconocidos de Montevideo, habiéndose transformado en un símbolo de la ciudad y en un importante punto turístico.

En este tiempo se encuentra en un separador en el costado de la Plaza Independencia y marca la entrada de la Ciudad Vieja.
