My dog isn't doing too great

Such a great dog

One thing that main health issues that Labradors deal with is tumors. Harley started getting tumors on his legs and stomach area a couple years ago and they didn't seem to affect him too much, but lately, they have begun to take a toll on him.

A few weeks ago, we noticed that one of the tumors on his leg was a bit bigger than normal. Later that evening, I saw what I thought was mud or something on my kitchen tile, so I wiped it up. Then I noticed that there was another spot on my carpet and that Harley was bleeding a bit from his leg where the tumor was. It somehow popped and shot the juices out.

This happened on a Sunday when all the vets in the area were closed, so we took the the internet to see if we could find out what to do next. It sounds like when tumors pop like this, it is a pretty serious thing and that the dog won't really last much longer.

Ever since it popped, he hasn't really shown any discomfort or anything, but I have noticed that every now and then he has a hard time going up the stairs. It is like he doesn't trust his legs to carry him up the stairs, so I end up picking him up and carrying him up. Other than that though, he hasn't really shown any signs of being in any distress. His appetite is the same and he still plays a lot with Titus and watches over the cats.

He is still a super happy dog, but he has been slowing down a bit over the past week. There isn't much that can be done at this point. A vet can do chemo, but that really won't extend his life much and I do not want his last time with us to be with him recovering from chemo.
At this point, all we can do is just continue to love him and keep him happy. He doesn't appear to be in pain and things seem like they are going good for him. It is basically a ticking time bomb and all we can do is keep him comfortable. All I know is that I am going to miss him when he is gone, but for now, I am giving him extra cuddles and snacks. He does love snacks.
Aaawwww give him big huggsss and love him a lot. 🤗 he will know you guys love him…
He is just a big ball of love.
I see… 🤗

Very very beatiful!!!❤️
Thank you
Oh no! What a sad post to read, I really do feel you. Give Harley his cuddles and snacks as much as you can. Take care!
He seems to be doing well right now, other than not being able to go up the stairs today. I started giving him joint medicine before all this happened, so I am hoping that will help him be in less pain during this time. It's just a waiting game at the moment and we are taking it day by day.
I´m sure the joint medicine will help him during this time, and also the love he feels from you all will help him a lot. It´s not easy to know that there isn´t much you can do. Hopefully, he can still be with you for a while, and you don´t have to miss him too soon from now. Every day is precious now.
Every day really is a precious gift.
One of the saddest posts I've read in a while, man. I hope he never suffers. I don't know what to say.
He doesnt appear to be suffering at all. Hopefully that lasts and he can continue to enjoy life.
Well, you never can tell what exactly is wrong with him since the vet doctors are not around.
I hope you know that there are times when it may give symptoms of a particular ailment but it is not what it is but it is just the way its body reacted to it
We are keeping an eye on it
nice that you are thinking of her. And you value him.
Ohhhh nooo , am sad 😭 right now, well just show him all the love he deserves, give him good food and spend more time with him.
That's the plan.
Perfect
How's your wife hope she's better
I am very sorry. I have had many dogs in my life already and have seen each one go, and my last Pitbull also suffered from tumors, specifically he had one in his testicles. We treated him for years with medication, but it was impossible to fight it, even more so considering he was already 10 years old and didn't have all his energy.
Make him have the best moments of his life. Even though he will be gone at some point, he will be grateful for the rest of yours :)
Thanks man. We are just monitoring him at this point and making sure he is comfortable. So far he doesn't seem to be having any physical issues and seems happy.
It's so hard to lose a dog. It's even harder to know you can't do anything about it. It is good that he is still happy. It's clear that you have his best welfare at heart.
All we can do it keep him happy and comfortable.
So sad to hear, and wish you fur baby comfort for is less being loved and pampered
Thank you
Oohhmg man i even cried a little :'( is hard to let go a dog that you have loved so much for so many years . Please plz give him his better last months/days on this planet, give him his favorite food, play with him , make these day worth for him
We are planning on making it the best ever for him.
Sorry to hear about this browski. I had a Black Lab named Maxx. He made it to 17+ years old. He had a giant tumor on his head. It never popped, as it was a bit more solid... but that thing oozed and leaked all day every day. I had to take care of him with that monstrosity for two years. It smelled like death, but he never showed discomfort over it. I think he enjoyed the nasty smell to be honest.
It was right next to his ear and i thought it might have grown into his brain. I got some medical advice and they said it was benign as most Lab tumors are and that it might do more damage than good to remove if it had a blood supply coming from deeper within. Old dogs and traumatic vet trips and procedures don't usually go so well.
I had a whole multi-times per day process to clean it and the worst thing was he would scratch it and lick his paw.. much like a cat. That did more damage than the actual thing itself.
Anyways, i wanted to encourage you that he went on for a long time. My buddy's wife was a vet and she said as long as a dog has their appetite they have something to live for, and usually do. With the love and care and extra treats... i am sure your pup will make it as long as they can! Max did almost die a few times and we were ready to throw in the towel... but he pulled through more than once.
Man, that doesnt sound like fun. My parent's had a cat that was so old that it was oozing as well and it smelled so bad. He was like a zombie.
That is good to hear that your dog was able to survive with the tumor for a while. I really hope that Harley is able to pull through for a while longer. He seems happy and that nothing is bothering him, so we are just going to take it a day at a time and give him all the loves.
I will keeping Harley in my thoughts and prayers browski! Dogs gotta lotta fight in 'em when they got the love of a family like yours... and plenty of treats.
Oh man, feeling so sorry to hear that. Although it probably doesn´t make much sense at this point, have you considered to try anything with cannabis oil? I know its mainly good for pain and chemo but who knows. Give him some cuddles from me as well :)
We haven't looked into cannabis oil for him. His joint medicine seems to be keeping him pain free, but if it gets to the point where he is having a hard time walking around normally, we may get some CBD treats for him.
Since it clocked on the other day that my oldest cat is... well, 'old' now, officially, I've been fretting this kind of thing every day. Hard for me to imagine the feeling you get seeing your companion in that state. Probably even harder with the love of a dog. Growing up with pets since childhood doesn't seem to prepare you for it any better XD
Point being, I feel it and I'm sorry to hear it
Awww, this is a sad thing to read. It's hard to watch your favorite like this.
Wishing him many painless and joyful days/months still to come!
Thank you. He has been the best dog ever.
It is a very complicated situation and it is a real shame that you are going through it.
You have to be glad that she is not suffering and that her last moments are going to be very good, nothing takes away the pain of a loss, but you have to be very appreciative of the time Harley has left.
