WHY I DECIDED TO EXPAND MY FASHION BRAND BEYOND WALK-IN CUSTOMERS AND USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO POWER UP MY FASHION BUSINESS

I have come to the realisation that in the fashion business it is not enough to rely on walk-in customers who bring their fabrics to be sewn if you want to make enough income. As much as I fancy making custom made outfits for my customers, I know that i need to include other forms of making money in my business if I want to maximise my gains and have long term sustainability on the long run. This is what birthed my decision to begin making ready-to-wear outfits for sale.

To be honest with you all, it is not an easy one to juggle both custom orders from walk-in customers and the production of ready-to-wear outfits. I have to battle with meeting up with deadlines of customers who come around to check if their pieces are ready for pickup and staying creative in producing trendy and stylish finished outfits that can be sold. But I would have to bear the cost of expansion (just like I will enjoy the gains when it is fully established) since it is my idea to expand. I will have to be more hardworking and dedicated if I want to meet up with my set goals.

During my research and survey on the ready-to-wear business I gathered that one secret of becoming successful is visibility. You may make the most beautiful designs in the world but if noone is seeing them, you're likely not going to make any sales. Therefore, it is important to put yourself out there on social media like WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram and of course, Hive. This simply means that you would be adding content creation to your job as a fashion designer.

In a bid to save cost and maximise profits, I decided to use myself as the model for the pieces I made. I didn't want to make extra expenses on hiring a model or a photographer, so I did the shoot with the help of my ever-supportive husband. We had the photography session last weekend in our sitting room - we tried to get a somewhat good background for the pictures and videos but it wasn't giving me what I really wanted. But we had to make do of what we have. I have started making calls on how to spice up that area for the house such that it will be perfect for making my photo and video shoots.

The shoot took about two hours because we had to figure out how to get the best angles, changing outfits, finding the right pose and also the dance steps for the social media reels. I didn't know it would take that much time nor energy. But in the end I'm proud of the results and it reminded me of the saying mostly used by fitness enthusiasts - "No Pain No Gain". It is a confirmation that if you want to grow and level up, you have to put in more work.

I have started posting on my social media platforms and I'm glad to say that I'm making sales already. I will continue to show up at every phase of ensuring my business moves to the next level whether it has to do with sourcing for fabrics, production, creating contents and promoting on social media for more visibility.
