THE HIDDEN STRUGGLES OF FASHION DESIGNERS AND WHY IT DESERVES THE SAME RESPECT AS MEDICINE AND LAW

Hey lovelies ❤️
It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese 😍
Welcome to my blog 🤗

In this post I will be ranting about some frequent experience that fashion designers face everyday in the course of carrying out our business among others. The fashion business is one of the most sought-after profession in the world which shapes how we humans appear physically on a daily basis. If not for this profession we may have been walking the streets naked.

One question that comes to mind is why tailoring or fashion designing as we love to call it nowadays is still underrated in Nigeria (and maybe in some other countries). The notion some people have for tailoring is that it is just a means of livelihood and not a profession that can contend with professions like Medical Doctor, Lawyer, Engineer and so on.
1000215484.jpg
When some people address fashion designers they don't accord them the respect they deserve. They ignore the years of learning the skill, training and experience that comes with such an important profession to humanity. One of the annoying things some people do to fashion designers is the way they ask for unbelievable discounts as if they are buying pepper or fish in the market.
1000215487.jpg
Well, the popular trend has been that once you get to a celebrity status as a fashion designer, that is, when you start making dresses for influential people in the society or sew for an international client, everyone will suddenly want to pay attention to you and give you some level of respect. This is just a reminder that you should know how to package yourself and know your worth. You must not work for a celebrity before you get the accolades you deserve in your profession.

Designing and sewing dresses is an art form that needs a high level of understanding to be able to create masterpieces. These 'understanding' takes years of apprenticeship and years of learning on the job to be able to meet the best standards.

Talking about standards, reminds me of another experience fashion designers face in business. This has to do with when customers want luxury outfits on a budget. For instance, how would you screenshot a fully beaded floor-length custom dress made with imported beads/crystals with multiple layers of luxury fabrics and expect the dress to be made for ₦20,000 (~$13).

It takes so much to make a masterpiece from quality materials to skilled craftsmanship and the most important one - time. The amount some people offer to pay for the kind of outfits they want to create is not even sufficient to buy the materials that will be needed not to talk of paying for services. This is the reason I don't get amused when I see some posts on social media with captions like "What I ordered vs What I got". Did you pay an expert that can replicate the design for you and did you pay the fashion deisgner well? The argument may be valid when you pay well and you didn't get value for your money.

I'm going to stop for now and continue at a later time because there are still some points I would love to address.

But till then...

Thanks for reading and see you in my next one.

My dear, you just spoke my mind, if not for a few people that actually accord us that respect and know our worth, most of us would have given up long time ago. Above all, the passion keeps us going as well. nice post

Fashion designers truly shape our visual identity. I know many friends who relate to the struggle for recognition in creative fields. What do you think would help elevate the status of fashion design in Nigeria?

Hello, thanks for your comment @oadissin.

I feel like we need to educate and create more awareness about the importance of fashion designing to our economy and also make people know that the Nigerian fashion is often deeply cultural rooted among others.

Also, I feel it is important for Fashion to be included into the curriculum of Schools from Elementary to Territiary.
