I'm delighted to be revealing the third dress in what I can call a series for you. Remember, the wonderful customer I told you I went to her house some days back to pick some fabrics she wanted to sew and more importantly to take her new body measurements? Yes, this is the third dress I will be sharing from those fabrics I picked up. Well, if this is your first time on my blog you can catch up with the gist using the links below

The style I will be sharing with you today is popular among the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. It is called Iro and Buba, an outfit that speaks class and luxury especially when it is made with lace fabrics. It is often accompanied with gele (head tie).

Let us attempt to explain Iro and Buba in a simple parlance. Iro is a big fabric or wrapper that is wrapped around the waist while Buba is a big free comfortable top that has loose sleeves. In other words, buba are usually free and not fitted shirts that is worn before tieing the iro.

This outfit is mostly worn to Owanbe, that is, Nigerian parties that is predominantly characterized by music, dance, food and exquisite fashion on display. Whether you want to attend a birthday, wedding, house opening ceremony or any event filled with love and glam, you should be expecting to see some amazing women dripping in iro and buba.

So, let me walk you through the step by step process of how I created magic using a sequin lace fabric to make iro and buba.

What We Need

  • Sequin lace fabric
  • Black lining
  • Breast pad
  • Zip
  • Matching thread
  • Tailoring chalk

Step by Step

  • To cut the buba, place the lace fabric on the cutting table onfold, using the wideness of 15".

  • Then we take our line measurement. We would take the shoulder line measurement first, that is, 16"÷2 which is 8", then take your bust point we would use the distance between the shoulder and nipple point is 12".

  • Then to take the underbust measurement, the distance between shoulder point and underbust is 16". Then we'd take the half length measurement which is 20", that the difference between the shoulder to the waist. The top length is 29".

  • Now, divide the nipple span is 9" divided by 2 is 4.5". So you will take the 4.5" through to the nipple point to the underbust, half length and full top length. We'd then connect the broken lines together.

  • After the nipple span measurement, take 2" outwards to enable space for the bust pad and to give room for darting for the blouse. This 2" will be taken from the underbust to the waist. 1000117350.jpg

  • Then use your French curve to curve out the bust forming a C-shape and connect to the armhole. Remember this bustier is a princess dart bustier.

  • Make a dart from the waist to the full top length to give the dress a fitting around the waist area.

  • Take the bodice measurements and cut it out.

  • Since we are using a lace we have to use our lining and hairstay.
    1000117353.jpg

  • Use the front piece to cut the back piece making provision for the zipper. After cutting the back piece then you will use the front and back pieces to cut lining and satin fabric for each part.
    1000117352.jpg

  • Next iron your hairstay on each of the pieces.

  • On your sewing machine join the pieces together and attach the sleeves to the armholes.
    1000117351.jpg

  • Attach the zip to it.

1000117356.jpg

  • To give the buba a clean finish you will hem the sleeves, bottom edge of the dress.
  • Now to the iro, all you need to do is to hem the four edges. I also attached two ropes at the edge that can be used to tie the iro.1000117372.jpg
  • Try the dress on to be fully assured that you didn't leave no stone unturned.

1000117371.jpg

  • Give the dress a good press by ironing all the edges.
  • The dress is ready for delivery.

I love the simplicity and beautiful outcome of this outfit, you've done a great job with the fabric as well.

This is beautiful. You started to explain 'Iro and Buba', I was hoping to see how you did cut that but diverted to a bustier instead of is the blog about a bustier?.

Hi @monica-ene, thanks for visiting my blog.

The buba (top), is a top that has bustier not the old fashioned ones. It is actually a young lady that is wearing it, so she wants it trendy. And the major part of the dress is the top since the iro(wrapper) doesn't have so much formalities. Hence, the reason I focused more on discussing about it.

I don't know if I answered the question well.

Best regards ❤️
