As a fashion designer, everyday of my life is filled with so much stories to tell and this is because I have encounter with so many people on a daily basis. Today, I will be sharing my experience with a gentleman that visited my fashion workshop. About a week ago, I had the pleasure of welcoming a man into my shop with a request of making a dress for his lovely wife. This dress is meant to be a surprise for his wife. Of course, he had a picture of what he wanted in his mind even though he didn't give me any specific style - elegant and top-notch.
He was not sure about the style, so he requested that i show him some styles that he could choose from. So, we went through my catalogue together to explore some trendy styles. Something caught my attention during this process and it was the efforts he put into scrolling through the catalogue to get something special.
After some minutes of looking through the styles we were able to choose a perfect design - a one-sided off shoulder straight gown with bias detail on the side. The deisgn caught his attention not only because it was elegant but the effects of the bias tape along the neckline and on the side of the dress. After we have agreed on the style then we went ahead to discuss about the cost of making the dress and the duration for delivery. He told me he would like the dress to be ready in two weeks and honestly I was fine with the deadline. It is something i can finish within few days due to my less busy schedule as at that time.
What is needed
- Ankara fabric
- 3-inch wide Black bias tape
- Thread
- Tailoring chalk
- Scissors
- Tape rule
The process
I started by drafting the design on the fabric. I drafted a straight gown pattern. Then to create the off-shoulder effect on one side i reduced the side by 5 inches and cut it slant.
Next I cut out the pattern that has been drafted out from the ankara fabrics
The next step is to weave the edges of the pieces and afterwards i proceeded to sew the pieces together.
When all the pieces have been joined together i added the 3 inches wide bias tape to the neckline and i also added it to the left side of the dress all the way from the top to the base of the dress. This detailing gave the dress a unique trendy look.
Then I used my pressing iron to press all the joining in the dress so that they can lap well.
On the day of delivery the customer was amazed at the finish work. He confessed that it was beyond his expectations and he's pretty sure his wife will love it. That was a satisfying compliment for me as a fashion designer.

This is beautiful and perfect. A little embellishment with stones will get those flowers glittery. The man must love his wife so much to surprise her with such gift taking his time and energy to make a suggestion.
