Late Nights, Tears, and Pressure: My Struggle to Complete a Blazer and Trouser on a Tight Deadline

Hey lovelies ❀️
It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese 😍
Welcome to my blog πŸ€—

Last week, Thursday to be specific, a customer stopped by at my shop to make a blazer and trouser that she want to be ready on or before Saturday evening because she needed to wear it on Monday to a corporate event. At first I declined the job considering the short time frame due to the abundance of unfinished works i have at hand and the fact that she wasn't agreeing to pay for the express work. However, she pleaded with me to do it for her as I was her last resort. Well, I had to give in to her request because she was a good customer.

The style isnt a regular one that i sew often. In a bid to deliver a perfect job, the first thing i did later that night was to watch some instructional videos on YouTube. After checking about three to four videos I got the idea that I wanted and I felt confident to start the production of the dress the next day. But, in life things does not always go as planned, every time.

However, i encountered some little setbacks during the making of the dress and I began to regret taking up the job. While I was ensuring that i keep up with the deadline I accidentally burnt the jacket so badly that i was confused on what next to do. At that moment, I began to cry, not because I was frustrated but because I always like when my jobs are delivered in top-notch condition. As I was weeping I began to think of the next step to take to rectify the issue and thankfully the fabric was remaining so i had to carefully recut the part that was burnt.

Could you believe the 'most interesting' part of the story? Well, im pretty sure you wouldn't see it coming. The customer that pleaded with me to do a fast track job for her failed to come pick up during the agreed timeline. So after all the late nights, tears and stress I went through she didn't show up. What I concluded is that she doesn't need the dress on Monday but she only said that to ensure that her dress is ready by the day she will be needing it. This is the trick used by most customers to avoid being disappointed by their fashion designers.

Materials that I used

  • Black crepe fabric
  • Lining
  • Hairstay
  • Zip
  • Thread

I started by drafting the style on paper, that is, paper drafting. This is an important step that will ensure that the blazer is properly cut. I drafted the front piece, back piece, sleeve piece and collar piece. 1000089650.jpgThe next step was to use the drafted paper design to cut out the black crepe fabric. The process of paper drafting was done solely for the blazers/jacket.

On the other hand, for the trousers I drafted on the fabric directly - I have mastery in cutting trousers so there was no need drafting on a paper. After the fabrics have been carefully out I weaved the edges of the fabrics on a weaving machine.

Moving forward, I also cut the lining in the same shape as the fabrics, however they are slightly smaller in size than the black crepe fabric to ensure that there is a perfect fit. In addition, the hairstay, that is needed to give the blazer a perfect structure was also cut the same way the lining was cut. Then, the hairstay was applied to the fabric using the heat from a pressing iron.

The next step is to join the pieces together. Afterwards, I took the blazer to where they would create a button hole and I fixed the button.

In all of this, I got to understand that sometimes it is not a bad idea to let your emotions out instead of holding it back. I felt more better and motivated to think about a solution after the mishap.

Thanks For Your Time and See You in My Next One.
