The Easter break is over and we are back to work. The holidays were filled with more of leisure activities such as visiting family and going to fun places than attending to business related issues. Like I reiterated in my last post, some of these designated holidays are important to help us stay away from work and focus on having some memorable moments outside of the work space. Well, as we anticipate the next public holidays let's utilize the remaining working days in the year to the fullest.

The dress I would be sharing with you today is a six pieces off-shoulder gown with single strap using ankara fabrics and I'm so in love with the outcome after all the work I have put in. This dress is for a friend who is attending an event in some weeks time. She requested for something simple but elegant and comfortable. She would have gone for a bespoke style where we'd do a corset but she needed something she can wear for long hours and still be comfortable in it.

The fabric for the gown is an ankara fabric. It has a beautiful leafy pattern that brings out the beauty of the design. The leafy pattern on the fabric has two colours that makes it more elegant and stunning. The two colours are pink and cream colour. I made use of 5 yards of the fabrics - the style is a six pieces gown so it consumes so much fabrics..

Materials needed

  • Ankara fabrics
  • Lining
  • Breast pad
  • Hemming gum
  • Zip
  • Scissors
  • Tailoring chalk
  • Pin

Step by step

  • Note that the six piece design is somewhat fitted at the upper part before it flares out at the lower part.
    1000111441.jpg

  • With that understanding, we shall incorporate it into taking the measurements. We shall measure the bust, waist, hips, shoulder width and length, armhole and the length of the gown.

  • We want the gown to be long, so we'd take the full measurements from shoulder to her foot.
    1000111442.jpg

  • Now, to the most important part that must be got right, else we'd not be able to produce the expected result - the cutting of the fabrics.

  • I start by cutting the upper part of the dress. I curve out the breast cup. For the length of the upper part I used 16 inches so that it will be 2 inches below her underbust.

  • The front part of the upper part of the dress has three pieces while the back has four pieces.
    1000111443.jpg

  • For the down part, we want to achieve six pieces, so you determine her hip measurement and divide by 6. That is, 42(hip measurement) divided by 6 which gives us 7. So, the 7 inches is what we will use to cut out the six panel.

  • Remember that the fabric is onfold, we'd divide 7 inches by 2 which is 3.5 inches then add stitching allowance of 0.75 inches.
    1000111444.jpg

  • So, 4.25 inches will be taken from the waist down to the full gown length. Then use your tailoring chalk to rule a line connecting the dot. At the bottom of the full gown length take 6.5" outward, then at the bottom of the gown you will have a total of 4.25"+6.5"=10.75" then connect this 10.75" up to the kneel part where you have your 4.25" you will have something like a funnel shape, cut it out and replicate this four times so you have 5 panel,so the sixth one you make provision for your zipper and cut it out so that zipper panel will be divided into 2 making 7 panels.
    1000111445.jpg

  • Go ahead and cut your linning and join all pieces together.

  • Then attach it to the upper part and shape the dress using the persons measurements.
    1000111446.jpg

  • Afterwards, I cut the fabric to add a single strap on the two shoulders to give it a sleek look.
    1000111447.jpg

  • Then I did a quick press with my iron which straightened the fabric and brought out the beauty of the gown.

  • The gown is ready for delivery.

The dress looks beautiful! And the design was well thought out to be comfortable and withstand all that fabric. Congratulations ๐Ÿ’•.
