Eid al-Fitr Edition: How I Made An A-line Gown With Peplum Sleeves Using Ankara Fabrics
Hey lovelies β€οΈ
It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese π
Welcome to my blog π€
This post is tagged Eid al-Fitr Edition. Eid al-Fitr is the festival that indicates the end of Ramadan, the fasting period. First off, I'd like to wish all my Muslim blog readers across the world a happy Eid al-Fitr.
Let me give a quick back story about the dress. The dress was made for a first time customer who needed the dress to be ready before today's celebrations. The young lady who wants the dress was accompanied to my shop by her mother who supervised the choosing of style and made payment. They opted for an A-line gown that has a peplum sleeves which was meant to be completed within 4 days. Well, the duration was short but I had to adjust my working schedules to be able to meet up with it. I'd have rejected the job considering the short timeline and my busy schedule but I needed all the money I can get now even if it means that I have to work extra hours.
The Customer's Measurements
- Shoulder: 14 inches
- Bust: 34 inches
- Underbust: 31 inches
- Waist: 32 inches
- Hip: 39 inches
- Bustline: 13 inches
- Half cut: 17 inches
- Gown length: 55 inches
- Sleeve length: 22 inches and 16 inches
- Round sleeve: 13 inches and 8 inches
The Materials needed
- 3Β½ yards of Ankara fabric
- Lining
- Measuring tape
- Zip
- Tailoring chalk
Step by Step
Let's start by cutting the front and back pieces for the dress by folding the fabric into two
The next step is to use a tailoring chalk to mark the shoulder measurement on the edge that was folded which is 14 inches divided by 2 - this will give us 7.
Next, we will mark the bust area which is 34 inches divided by 4 - which will equateto 8.5 inches. Don't forget to add 2 inches for sewing allowance.
Consequently, we will mark the underbust, waist measurement which we will also add 2 inches allowance to accordingly.
The neckline we would be using is a round one. So it would also be cut out as well.
For us to get the length of the gown, we would mark from the waistline and also create the A-line effect.
The next step is to cut out all the marked areas carefully and prepare to join them together.
Before you begin joining them together you can head over to your weaving machine and weave the edges of the fabrics
Now, join the front and back pieces together. Join the left and right shoulder as well.
The choice of sleeve for the dress is a peplum sleeve, so to cut out the sleeve we will fold the fabric into four. Mark a length of 16, with the upper part of the sleeve width to be 13 divided by 2 is equal to 6.5 plus 1 inch for allowance.
For the peplum, the total sleeve length is 22 so we have alredy cut out 16 inches for the upper sleeve and the remaining is 6 inches is for the peplum, so fold into 8 layers so that you can cut the two sides at the same time.
Next, attach the peplum fabric to the sleeve base of the dress and attach to the armholes.
Attach your zip to the back of the dress and iron all the joinings in the dress.
