It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese 😍
Welcome to my blog 🤗

There is a sense of satisfaction about creating a beautiful piece, most especially when it is for kids. Kids look stunning in well crafted dresses and accessories which makes me have that amazing satisfactory feeling when I get feedbacks through pictures or when I'm opportune to see the kid wear the dress or accessories.

Today, I will be showing you how I made a beautiful headband with bow for a baby girl using the traditional Nigerian fabric called aso-òkè. Aso-òkè is a fabric that is attributed to the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria and it is usually hand woven. It can be woven into different colors and designs. As you can see that the two fabrics I'm using for the headband is so beautiful and unique. One has a mix of different shades of green and white while the other is brown and white.

So, relax and stay glued as I walk you through the process of making this beautiful piece.

What You Need

  • Aso Oke fabrics

  • Elastic band

  • Needle

  • Thread

  • Measuring tape

  • Tailoring chalk

  • Pressing iron

Step by Step

  • To make this bow headband, there are three major materials we would be using which are the fabric for the head band, fabric for the bow and the elastic.

  • The fabric for the headband is measurement 31" (length) and 5" (width)

  • The fabric for the bow is 11" (length) and 8" (width)

  • The length of the elastic is 16". But the circumference of the head of the baby is 15", so I added ½" on both sides to create room for seam allowance.
    1000120348.jpg

  • Now, that we have sorted out the measurements of the major materials we'd be using, let us proceed.

  • So, you would take the fabric for the headband to the sewing machine - fold the entire length and sew with ½" seam allowance and right side together. Remember to leave a part where you would use to turn the fabric to the right side.

  • Next, turn the right sides out using a safety pin or nail. You can use your Scissors to poke tge edges out so that they will all be pointed.
    1000120356.jpg

  • Now, using the same tool you used to turn your fabrics right side out (safety pin or nail), use it to pass your elastic band through the headband fabrics.
    1000120357.jpg

  • Use your sewing machine to sew the edges with the elastic band and set this aside.
    1000120358.jpg

  • Repeat the same process for the fabric of the bow too, that is, with right sides touching sew the length and width. Then turn the right sides out using a safety pin or nail.
    1000120363.jpg

  • Now to create the bow, you'd pinch the middle to form a bow shape and use a small strip of fabric to wrap the centre of the bow. Use your needle and thread to neatly join it together.

  • Afterwards, attach the headband to the bow using your needle and thread. You have to sew this neatly and carefully to get a good look.1000120365.jpg

  • The headband with a bow is ready.

It's so simple and cute. I'd share a picture if I'm able to get a picture from the baby's parent.
