A Castle On An Extinct Volcano - Edinburgh
I had the pleasure of visiting Edinburgh last week and one of the main things we wanted to do was go to Edinburgh Castle, this castle is built on an extinct volcano that is estimated to have risen around 350 million years ago, however the castle has stood looking over Edinburgh since the 11th century.
It's a place I've seen on the TV and always wanted to give it a visit, to my surprise I got in for free, although just be aware this isn't available to everyone, they do have offers for other organisations members, so this is where the English Heritage membership came in handy, as I am a member and have been for more than a year, it's free, so that saved £40 for two of us, which was great.
I just love the entrance to the castle, and the old cobbled streets, I can only imagine the number of people who have walked up here over the last 1000 years, and how many famous people have been here too.
The views from the castle are magnificent, I can see why they built it there as you have a clear view in all directions.
Once you are in the castle grounds, it's like a small village, with different buildings and attractions, some of the buildings you cannot take pictures, for example the war memorial building, dedicated to the soldiers of world war one, it is beautiful inside though.
St James Chapel, is the oldest building to stand on the grounds, dating back to around the 1130's.
Inside the chapel, it is quite small.
Around the back/front of the War Memorial.
We spent a good few hours around the castle until our bellies got the better of us and we decided to go for some food, sadly the cafe at the castle was pretty busy so we couldn't get in there, but we found a fantastic place called Arcade on Cockburn Street, which is where the fight scene with Wanda and Vision was filmed in Avengers: Infinity War, sadly I didn't know that at the time or I would have taken more shots.
The Prison Area
The prison area was much darker than it looks on the photos, even thought it was a prison, I'm not sure if it was the lighting or that we had just come out of the cold into something a bit warmer, but it kind a felt cosy in a weird way, although I wouldn't want to stop in there lol.
There is a lot more to the castle that I have posted photos of, one of my favourite parts, in which you cannot walk around was the Dog graveyard, for all the dog soldiers that have served throughout history, I thought this was touching and really happy that the animals haven't been forgotten.
I really hope you've enjoyed this post, the next time I visit I will be taking my camera, there's also so much to do in Edinburgh, I do recommend spending at least a couple of days there.
Thanks for reading
All the best :-)

What kind of flags are flying over the castle?
Hi, with what I remember they had the Scottish national flag as well as the union flags flying.
Nice place, friend... it seems like a lot of people visit there.
