There are photos that are not measured by their megapixels, but by the memories they trigger. Today I dust off my old LG-K10 to share 9 fragments of a Havana I visited years ago. It was 2017 when my photographic eye was just awakening. These images are the result of curiosity, a basic smartphone, and the desire to capture a city that seems suspended in time.

Hay fotos que no se miden por sus megapíxeles, sino por los recuerdos que disparan. Hoy desempolvo mi viejo LG-K10 para compartir 9 fragmentos de una Habana que visité hace años. Era el 2017 cuando mi ojo fotográfico apenas despertaba. Estas imágenes son el resultado de la curiosidad, un smartphone básico y el deseo de capturar una ciudad que parece suspendida en el tiempo.

The beginning of the adventure / El inicio de la aventura

From the rooftop of the SOMEC building in El Vedado, I captured this view. Below, a capitalist-era mansion that exhales stories of former luxuries. In the background, the sea. Getting this perspective had its price: I had to use my charms with a beautiful Habanera to access this privileged spot... but the result was worth it. 🤫

Desde la azotea del edificio SOMEC en El Vedado, logré esta vista. Abajo, una casona de la época capitalista que exhala historias de antiguos lujos. Al fondo, el mar. Conseguir esta perspectiva tuvo su precio: tuve que usar mis dotes de conquista con una linda habanera para acceder a este punto privilegiado... pero el resultado valió la pena.

Turning slightly, the Focsa Building appears. Did you know it was considered one of the seven wonders of Cuban civil engineering? Completed in 1956, its 39 floors were built without high-rise cranes, using hydraulic jacks. Its shadow dominates El Vedado like a concrete lighthouse that refuses to age.

Girando un poco, aparece el Edificio Focsa. ¿Sabían que fue considerado una de las siete maravillas de la ingeniería civil cubana? Terminado en 1956, sus 39 pisos se construyeron sin grúas de gran altura, usando gatos hidráulicos. Su sombra domina El Vedado como un faro de cemento que se niega a envejecer.

From that same height, I found this balcony. I sent it to a contest a long time ago and nothing happened, but for me, it is everything. It transmits a solitude and a nostalgia that are only be understood when you're far from your family.

Desde esa misma altura encontré este balcón. Lo envié a un concurso hace tiempo y no pasó nada, pero para mí lo es todo. Transmite una soledad y una nostalgia que solo se entienden cuando estas lejos de tu familia.

Old Havana: Where time stands still / Habana Vieja: Donde el tiempo se detiene

I visited some friends in the heart of Old Havana, people that time took away from my life. There, the architecture is a miracle of balance. Many of these buildings function today as "solares" or citadels, where what was once a family mansion now houses dozens of families in subdivided spaces called "barbacoas". It is both fascinating and sad to see balconies that seem to hang by a thread of hope.

Visité a unos amigos en el corazón de la Habana Vieja, personas que el tiempo se llevó de mi vida. Allí, la arquitectura es un milagro de equilibrio. Muchos de estos edificios funcionan hoy como "solares" o ciudadelas, donde lo que antes era una mansión familiar ahora alberga a decenas de familias en espacios subdivididos llamados "barbacoas". Es fascinante y triste a la vez ver balcones que parecen colgar de un hilo de esperanza.

You can't say you were in Havana if you didn't hear a "pregón" (street cry). Street vendors with fruit carts are the pulse of the city. The cry of "Maniiii!" or the fruit vendor's call is the soundtrack of these streets.

No puedes decir que estuviste en La Habana si no escuchaste un pregón. Los vendedores ambulantes con carretas de frutas son el pulso de la ciudad. El "¡Maniiii!" o el vendedor de frutas son la banda sonora de estas calles.

Museos sobre ruedas / Museums on wheels

The famous "Almendrón". These 1950s cars survive thanks to Cuban ingenuity, adapting parts from Russian trucks or modern engines to bodies from six decades ago. They are the collective taxis that move the city, and they are true relics that refuse to die. Nothing makes you feel close to your neighbor better than an almond tree.

El famoso "Almendrón". Estos autos de los años 50 sobreviven gracias al ingenio cubano, adaptando piezas de camiones rusos o motores modernos a carrocerías de hace seis décadas. Son los taxis colectivos que mueven la ciudad, y son unas verdaderas reliquias que se niegan a morir. Nada mejor para sentirte muy cerca del prójimo que un almendrón.

Havana is a city of contrasts, and black and white helps to highlight Cuban folklore and the hidden poetry of our daily lives. But what if... we mixed it with some color?
