Discovering the historic heart of San Joaquín in Carabobo, Venezuela [ENG/SPA]

I recently revisited the town of San Joaquín, this time focusing on its historic center, with the desire to understand its origins—origins that, in every small Venezuelan town, are usually found in places like this: the main plaza and the cathedral. It seems to have been a pattern of Spanish colonization: every new urban center had to feature a plaza and a Catholic cathedral. I say this because the setup is repeated throughout Venezuela. I don't know if this is the case in Spain, as I've never visited, but what's important here is that in my country, there is always an effort to keep these places as well-maintained as possible.

Descubriendo el corazón histórico de San Joaquín en Carabobo, Venezuela

Volví a visitar el pueblo de San Joaquín, esta vez su casco histórico, con el deseo de conocer sus orígenes, que normalmente en todo pequeño pueblo de Venezuela se encuentra en lugares como este, su plaza y catedral. Parece que fue un patrón de la colonización española, todo centro urbano que comenzaba debía tener una plaza y una catedral católica, lo digo porque esto se repite en toda Venezuela, no sé si sea así en España, jamás la he visitado, pero lo importante acá es que en mi país siempre hay un esfuerzo por conservar estos lugares lo mejor cuidados que se pueda.

I enjoy visiting them and, if possible, stepping inside old houses to learn the history of the place thoroughly. They fascinate me because some places that started this way—with small hamlets, a plaza, and a cathedral—grew into large urban centers, leaving these original sites forgotten. However, in others, significant efforts are made to preserve and beautify them to serve as tourist attractions. While that's not exactly the case in San Joaquín, its historic center is certainly in good condition.

Me gusta visitarlos y de ser posible entrar a casa antiguas y conocer a fondo la historia del lugar. Me llaman la atención porque algunos lugares que comenzaron así, con pequeños caseríos, una plaza y una catedral, se convirtieron en grandes centros urbanos y estos lugares quedan en el olvido, sin embargo, en otros se hacen esfuerzos para conservarlos y embellecerlos para que sirvan de centros turísticos. No es exactamente el caso de San Joaquín, pero su centro histórico si está en buenas condiciones.

San Joaquín is a small town that began in 1795. The lands, once used for farming, were designated for a new plaza and church to establish a new parish in the eastern axis of what is currently Carabobo state. Back then, it was part of the Province of Caracas, within the Captaincy General of Venezuela. This context explains why a church and a plaza were the starting point for a new settlement, as Catholic parishes were an important territorial division.

San Joaquín es un pequeño poblado que tuvo sus inicios en 1795, las tierras que una vez fueron utilizadas para la siembra, se fijaron para una nueva plaza e iglesia, esto con el fin de crear una nueva parroquia en el eje Oriental de los es actualmente el estado Carabobo, pero que para aquellos años eran parte de la Provincia de Caracas, de la capitanía general de Venezuela; por eso las parroquias católicas eran una importante división territorial, eso explica un poco porque una iglesia y plaza como punto de partida para iniciar un nuevo poblado.

With growth came residents, many of them laborers on farms and plantations managed by prominent families, the blancos mantuanos (the colonial elite). One of the most important families in Carabobo was the Zuloaga family, of Basque origin, who were dedicated to growing indigo. They had their house in San Joaquín, the birthplace of Alejo Zuloaga, a key figure in Carabobo's history and the founder of the University of Valencia (now the University of Carabobo). The Zuloaga house is still standing, right across from the town cathedral. It has been restored and converted into a student training center for young people, run by Empresas Polar. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to take pictures inside.

Con el crecimiento llegan los pobladores, muchos de ellos obreros de fincas y plantaciones manejadas por familias prominentes, blancos mantuanos. Una de las familias más importantes de Carabobo fueron los Zuloaga, de origen vasco que se dedicaron a la siembra del añil. Ellos tuvieron su casa en San Joaquín, la que vio nacer a Alejo Zuloaga gran personaje de la historia carabobeña, fundador de la universidad de Valencia, hoy universidad de Carabobo. La casa de los Zuloaga sigue en pie, frente a la catedral del pueblo y fue restaurada y convertida en un centro de formación estudiantil para jóvenes, dirigida por Empresas Polar; lamentable no se me permitió tomar fotos en su interior.

fter Venezuela's independence, town plazas were renamed Plaza Bolívar. Without exception, they all feature a statue of the liberator, Simón Bolívar, at the center, and San Joaquín is no exception. Unlike others I've seen, this one is not an equestrian statue; it's simply the liberator standing, brandishing his sword, on a pedestal with a marble plaque honoring his liberating feat. I liked the pedestal, which rises from a base surrounded by chains attached to bollards, each one imprinted with the municipal coat of arms.

Tras la independencia de Venezuela, las plazas de los pueblos pasaron a llamarse plaza Bolívar, todas sin excepción tiene en el centro una estatua del libertador Simón Bolívar y San Joaquín no es la excepción. A diferencia de otras que he visto, esta no es ecuestre, es solo el libertador de pie empuñando su espada, sobre un pedestal con una placa de mármol que hace honores a su proeza liberadora. Me gustó el pedestal que se eleva sobre una base rodeada de cadenas que se sujetan a los bolardos y cada uno tiene impreso el escudo del municipio.

Another unique spot found near the Plaza Bolívar is a monument dedicated to the Shepherds of San Joaquín (Pastores de San Joaquín). This tradition, which involves a festive street dance, will be celebrating its 105th anniversary in the municipality this December 24th. The dance is performed by men and women to the rhythm of parranda music, commemorating the shepherds' visit to the baby Jesus at the manger. This particular monument features a plaque that references the tradition's 100th anniversary, along with images alluding to the shepherds and their colorful, striped attire.

Otro espacio particular que se encuentra en la cercanías de la plaza Bolívar es un monumento a los Pastores de San Joaquín, una tradición que cumple este 24 de diciembre 105 años que llegó a este municipio. Se trata de un baile a ritmo de parranda que hombres y mujeres realizan por la calles del pueblo, conmemorando la visita de los pastores al niño dios en el pesebre. Este monumento consta de una placa que hace referencia a los 100 años de la tradición con imágenes alusivas a los pastores y su vestimenta de tiras coloridas.

I found a very interesting contrast while walking through the historic center: a new mural that is currently under development, just a few yards away. I asked a local resident who the people in the images were, and he indicated that they are notable sports figures who have stood out nationally and internationally. He mentioned that there are only three images so far but that many more will follow, including athletes and other illustrious people from the municipality. I loved this mix of modern art with the area's ancient buildings.

Un contraste bien interesante que me encontré mientras recorría el casco histórico, a solo pocos metros un nuevo mural que está en desarrollo. Pregunte a un vecino de la zona quienes eran los personajes de las iamgenes y me indico que son figuras del deporte que han destacado a nivel nacional e internacional, que apenas son tres las imágenes, pero que serán muchas otras, entre deportistas y personas ilustres del municipio. Me encanto esta mezcla de arte moderno con las edificaciones antiguas de la zona.
