Giving new life to a beach chair, a fabric makeover🧵 [Esp/Eng]

Hola a todos. Espero que se encuentren super bien. Hoy les quiero mostrar cómo fue el proceso de restaurar una silla que mi mamá tenía desde hace muchos años para darle una segunda vida. Resulta que a mi mamá y a mí nos gusta siempre sacarle el máximo provecho a las cosas y si hay algo que podemos mejorar o renovar, lo hacemos. Así fue el caso de esta silla, pues hace muchos años la usaba para ir a la playa pero por tanto uso la tela se puso fea, aún así la base seguía en excelente estado por lo que botarla no era una opción. Aprovechando que teníamos una tela perfecta para forrarla, buscamos el resto de los materiales y pusimos manos a la obra. Acompáñenme en este proceso.🪡🧵📷🌟

Hello everyone. I hope you're doing great. Today I want to show you the process of restoring a chair my mom had for many years, giving it a second life. My mom and I always try to make the most of things, and if there's something we can improve or renew, we go for it. That was the case with this chair, she used it for beach trips years ago, but the fabric had worn out from so much use. Still, the frame was in excellent condition, so throwing it away wasn’t an option. Since we had the perfect fabric to reupholster it, we gathered the rest of the materials and got to work. Utilizamos un hilo resistente que teníamos, el cual fue nylon azul y la tela era una tela impermeable para toldos, lo que la hace muy resistente.

We used a strong thread we already had, which was blue nylon, and the fabric was a waterproof canvas typically used for awnings, making it very durable.

Lo primero que hice fue desarmar el forro viejo para tomarlo como patrón y recortar la tela con la misma forma. Posteriormente colocamos vivos en los bordes que no llevaban uniones de costuras para evitar que se deshilache.

The first thing I did was take apart the old cover to use it as a pattern and cut the new fabric in the same shape. Then we added piping to the edges that didn’t have seam joins to prevent fraying.

Luego, según el ancho que tenía la silla, marcamos dobleces con una tablita de madera para que quedaran bien marcados. Esta es una técnica que tiene mi mamá.

Next, based on the width of the chair, we marked folds using a small wooden board to make them crisp and defined. This is a technique my mom uses.

Hicimos costuras por ambos lados y luego dos arriba y dos abajo, quedando cuatro ranuras por donde irían los tubos de la silla. Después de que le montamos el forro, mi mamá con un yesquero, quemó las puntas del nylon para evitar que el hilo se suelte. Y listo🌞

We stitched both sides, then two at the top and two at the bottom, creating four slots where the chair’s tubes would go. After we fitted the cover, my mom used a lighter to burn the nylon ends so the thread wouldn’t unravel. And that’s it🌞

Así fue como terminamos nuestra silla y quedó como nueva. Ahora sí la podríamos usar otra vez para ir a la playa, o simplemente relajarnos en ella porque es cómoda. Además, mi mamá y yo pasamos un día genial realizando este proyecto.

That’s how we finished our chair, and it looked brand new. Now we can use it again for beach days or simply relax in it because it’s so comfortable. Plus, my mom and I had a great day working on this project together.

Como les comentaba antes, para mí es importante siempre aprovechar al máximo las cosas, darle una segunda vida a aquellos objetos que todavía se les puede sacar provecho y reusar eso que todavía está en buen estado. No hace falta botar lo que a veces está un poco viejo, con tela nueva, creatividad y un poco de esfuerzo, logramos darle a esta silla mucho más tiempo de uso. Espero que les haya gustado este post. As I mentioned before, I believe it’s important to make the most of things, give a second life to objects that still have potential and reuse what’s still in good condition. There’s no need to throw away something just because it looks a bit old. With new fabric, creativity, and a bit of effort, we gave this chair many more years of use. I hope you enjoyed this post.
