Hello everyone and welcome to my first post in this wonderful pinmapple community. For this first post I wanted to share my visit to the ancient Roman city of Dougga located in the current Tunisia. A city in an excellent state of preservation and with a very high archaeological value that I was able to visit during my last visit to Tunisia.

The Theatre

Dougga was an ancient Roman city located in the north of Tunisia in the interior of the country, far from the metropolis of Carthage. It was a city with an astonishing cultural richness that saw several civilisations pass through its lands. Punics, Numidians, Romans and Byzantines inhabited its streets.

One of its main buildings was the theatre. Roman society had an important premise to avoid riots and to keep its inhabitants entertained: the famous phrase "panen et circenses" of which the theatre was a fundamental part.

The Capitol

In Dougga you could find a multitude of buildings and temples. From the thermal baths to the temples of Saturn and Juno Caelestis, which are still preserved and can be visited today. However, the predominant building of Roman civil architecture was undoubtedly the Capitol.

The Capitol of Dougga was built in the 2nd century BC and was dedicated to the deities of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. Nestled next to it were the Temples of Mercury on one side and the Forum on the other. Depicted on its pediment was a sculpture of a man with an eagle representing the Emperor Antonius Pius.

As a history buff myself, I can say that the visit to Dougga was a wonderful experience. To be able to see first hand all those buildings, to be able to walk through its streets and, at the same time, to imagine what life would be like for its citizens was an experience that I highly recommend. The level of preservation of Dougga is well worth a visit to Tunisia.

And you, which Roman ruins do you recommend? Do you have any near your home? Leave me your impressions in the comments.

And I don't want to close this post without thanking you if you've made it this far and I hope you've enjoyed it. Greetings!

This looks like a really well kept site and the best thing is that there doesn't seem to be any other visitors around. Must be a well kept gem!
